Somebody Turn the Light On!

Tea and Banana Bread.JPG

Oh. My. Word.  I had such a senior moment today that I can hardly believe myself!  I had spent the day baking and decorating sheet cakes for our church. (We are celebrating Pastor Appreciation Month this coming Sunday), baking muffins for an all day meeting tomorrow, and banana breads to just have on hand.

My husband and I were sitting and waiting for our after dinner tea to be done heating in the microwave and smelling the wonderful smell of banana bread baking in the oven when the buzzer sounded.  I leapt out of my chair and went to take the bread out, opened the oven and thought, “What in the world is wrong with the banana bread?”

I made the mistake of voicing this thought out loud in front of my husband.  His first question was wondering (also aloud) if I had forgotten a certain ingredient.  He began naming ingredients (some that don’t even go in banana bread). I told him that I had remembered ALL the ingredients and that forgetting one would not make the bread “goopy and undone-looking”.

As I was standing there looking at the breads that were just sitting there looking goopy while they sat in their loaf pans in my oven , it occurred to me that the timer buzzing might, just might have been the microwave for the tea. It was a light bulb coming on kind of moment! (I wonder if it used to be a candle-lighting moment before there was electricity?)

I am pretty sure that my husband sometimes really wonders about the state of my brain. He is probably very sure that at times someone has snuffed most, if not all of the candles out that were supposed to be lighting all those deep dark areas. Hopefully he just thinks that I do it to keep him on his toes.

I remember going to a conference where the speaker was a woman. She had a solution for some of these less than stellar moments….always keep a can of corn on the step.  That way if you go up or downstairs for something, forget what that something was and don’t want to admit to that fact….you can always carry the can of corn along with you and look like you really do know what you are doing.

Unfortunately I think that strategy requires not wondering aloud what is wrong with the banana bread. My theory is that we can only hold so much information in our brains and then we need to kick some tidbit of information out to make room for more.  I am pretty sure that is the only way multi-tasking works.

Sometimes our lives just get too busy to keep everything straight and we mess up. When these oops moments happen we have two choices….we can see the humor in it or we can beat ourselves up for doing something wrong.  On this one, I am choosing humor. If you are like me, in the past, you have spent too much time picking the other choice.

Life really is too short to spend in second-guessing yourself so take a deep breath, realize that some things are not a life altering moment and go light a candle to brighten the darkness.  Who knows…..you may even brighten the day for those around you and sharing your experiences might make life easier for someone else.

Light Your World.JPG

A human being is fashioned with innumerable qualities
which makes a soul shine in the darkness like a candle lighting up
every nook and cranny of the universe
…A human is a soul carrying a flame forever.

Glad to read I’m not alone! Ha! Love the part about saying things aloud to make room for more! I’ve found myself wondering WHY I’ve been doing that lately! 🙂

I’m with you. Humor is a good choice. The other is, well, not much fun. Great post.

I do have several teapots! This is one our kids gave us…..they did not like us using a quart canning jar in the microwave for tea LOL….our son thought it looked like a spittoon (due to the staining from tea)!
My favorite teapot is one that my Grandma had. It has a few chips but, oh so many memories.

I can visualize that ooey gooey banana bread! You surely would never forget the ingredients, would you? Last year I made two pecan pies for the teachers at school. The pies just did not “come together” correctly. I did not know what was wrong, but I tasted one and it was very sweet and sort of weirdly tasty. I put out plastic bowls and spoons beside the pies. Later, a teacher came by my room and said: “Everybody loves the pecan pie pudding. We want the recipe!”…I said ok and didn’t tell her that something was wrong. I thought that my oven had gone haywire! On the way home, I realized that I had not included the eggs! I had to admit my error to the other teachers! So disturbed! This post on candles is excellent! Loved it! I hope that your church celebration is a happy and fulfilling event!

I love your pecan pie story. My banana bread did finish baking but some of them did fall in the center because I had the oven door open too long while I was having my moment. They still taste good, so that is a plus! They just do not look pretty enough to give away.
Our church serves coffee, juice and cake for special things….somewhere along the line I have become the church cake baker. It is a nice little extra job :).

I worked out, a few weeks ago, what it was which was causing these brain fails. Sadly, with the passing of time, I’ve forgotten what it is which I worked out was causing these brain fails.

[sigh] .… and round and round the merry-go-round goes.

sending oodles of squidges and lots of love to … er … who are you again? lol

For a long time I didn’t believe my husband and sons that I actually have conversations with myself. Then, early one morning I actually heard myself doing it and the really embarrassing thing was I was darned near getting into an argument with myself over what I (we?) should get done first. Thanks for sharing your self-talk moment. I feel much better about mine. And so do I.

LOL … I’ve called Mr. Cobs both of my daughters names, called my daughters each others names, and called the dog all the names under the sun until I hit her name. I swear that my brain is asleep 50% of the time I look like I’m awake, and only asleep half the time that I look like I’m asleep … because when I wake up, I recall the most ridiculous, vivid dreams.

I’ve put in a request for a Heavenly technician to visit while I’m asleep and actually sort the wiring out. I think there’s an electrical … electrical …. electrical … f.f.f.f.f.f.f..ffault.

We are do these things. There is simply so much in a person’s brain as they get older – we have to search harder to find the info we want. Ha I like the can of corn story, but coming out of the bedroom or bathroom with that corn would not work. Ha You were smelling that good banana bread and it was on your mind.

Just found your blog and love your posts! I too forget things in my cooking sometimes. Made plenty of ooops in my life time and I too talk to myself! So does my hubby and we call out “what” to one another. I keep telling myself not to respond but than habits are hard to break. Humor sure turns a lemon into lemonade. If we can laugh at ourselves life is easier!

OMG!! This is a daily occurrence for me! With the can of corn, I’d grab it then walk into the kitchen and wonder what I was planning on making with it…LOL!! Your bread looks delicious and not goopy at all…and your settings are so festive looking too! I have the same belief, that the brain can only hold so much information and it decides what’s important to retain and what isn’t. Yes we must definitely laugh rather than the alternative! xo

I will be employing the can of corn stratagem myself – genius bit of advice! You aren’t alone. I have made coffee with gravy granules before now and (on more than one occasion) made a meal (the kind you just put on a plate, not the kind you take in dishes to the table) and then immediately opened the bin and thrown it away!

If it makes you feel better, I did a really big booboo on Saturday. My daughter has saved her money for months to buy an American Girl doll, so last weekend I took her to the American Girl store. I had to stop and get gas in the car first. We drove all the way to the store (which is a drive in LA traffic), and walked around the store looking at everything for a few hours. I was standing at the register helping her pay for what she picked out when I realized I left my credit card in the car. After I paid for the gas, I had put it in the cup holder instead of my purse, and for 2 or 3 hours, anyone could have walked right up to my car and been able to steal my credit card number. I don’t know what I was thinking.
