Chicken Wonderings

Chicken Grandma meets the Big Chicken.jpg

Every once in awhile a person spots something that just leaves them wanting to see it again. Usually this is the type of thing that just captures your fancy and makes you grin. It is always something that makes you take a step back and just say “wow”.

A while back my husband and I took a side street in a town about 20 miles away. We were on our way to the grocery store and thought this route would be quicker. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted something so amazing that I knew I would need to see it again.  I also knew I would need to have my picture taken with it.

That something, was the biggest chicken I have ever laid eyes on! It was huge and it was impressive. It left me wondering just who owns such a bird?  It also left me wondering what kind of person owns such a bird? And then the next question is “where does one go to get such a bird?”

Part of me thinks this is really great and how cool it would be to have a chicken of this size to greet people as they drove on our yard. (I am picturing my husband doing an eye-roll when he reads this!) Wouldn’t it be fun to see the different reactions people would have when they encountered a chicken of this size standing proud and tall…..really tall, at the end of the driveway? I can easily see family photos with the chicken and putting them on Christmas cards.

Another part of me wonders about the history of this chicken.  Did it start out by some restaurant?  Did this huge metal beauty grace the front yard of a large poultry producer? Did some chicken grandma purchase him and bring him home only to find chicken grandpa wasn’t as impressed with her purchase? Was this wonderful specimen of chickanry (I really have no idea if this is a word….but I do kind of like how it sounds.) banned from his former residence and brought here?  How in the world did this wondrous metal chicken end up here?

Unfortunately I don’t think I am going to know the answers to my burning questions. At least not tonight I won’t.  I may have to do some digging to find out some of the answers to my wonderings. For now I will just have to content myself with the pictures of this stunning bird. He is a really happy-looking, large metal chicken!

It is probably just as well I do not personally own this big metal rooster. It would probably be intimidating to my “girls”. I wonder if it would prompt them to lay more eggs just to compensate or if it would scare them into less egg laying? Another mystery that  will never be solved…….

Money can’t buy happiness;
but it can buy chickens……
and that’s sort of the same thing.

You know what they say about our subconscious. It’s very powerful. You somehow attracted this chicken. Lols. 🙂 This is a very strong branding photo for your blog ^_^

I was wondering if that picture was taken in front of your home, probably because of who you are:-) Your writing is always so good, I loved reading your wonderings and the new word coinage; chickanry

Before I began reading I was over-joyed with the thought that Chicken Grandad had come home from some trip or other and bought you a present! I was absolutely beside myself that this fabulous man would actually buy it for you. What a Guy!!!

Then I began reading and felt a little pang of sadness. It’s a wonderful specimen of Chickanry and your NEED to be it’s owner. I’m pretty certain that CHICKEN GRANDAD WILL READ THIS AND SUDDENLY GET AN IDEA INTO HIS HEAD …. that he could buy this for you as a surprise Christmas Present. WOW … THAT’S SUCH A GREAT IDEA CHICKEN GRANDAD! Aww you are such a perfect husband.

Your feathered girls won’t get jealous … but they’ll use it as shelter when it rains. They’ll probably christen it ‘Big Chicken Mamma’, and think you bought it just for them to cluck around and show off to Mamma with their chicken party tricks.

You have to have one of these at the gate to your property. (chained down so that no passing chicken fancier helps themself to it).

LOVE the picture of you with her.

You should have seen the guy across the street. He was taking a smoke break (I think) and I am pretty sure he thought we were a little past center (or a lot crazy)…..but hey…..you can’t get your picture taken with a huge chicken every day!
I will have to relay subtle (or blatant) hints to Chicken Grandad….

Well, such a neat chicken. Thanks for sharing this. My Granddaughter loves chickens, I will have to tell her about this. A couple of miles from us they just put in 6 chicken houses. On top of a metal pole gateway arch stands a metal 6 foot rooster. Can’t stand next to it to show its size like you have done in your photo. Nice post.

Interesting questions. While you ponder, I think you should definitely make this chicken the grand dame of all your chickens. If it does send off sparks in a thunderstorm, I want to see photos of the grand event. If you can safely get them, of course! 🙂

Sorry. 1970s I think. Stop-go animation featuring classical Greek myths. Jason and the Argonauts? All the props were really clunky, no attention paid to scale. Totally marvellous movies!

I am going to have to check that one out. I kind of like the whole Greek mythology thing. (though it is difficult to explain them to my husband who loves fact over fiction). If you add amazing odd props that would make it even better. I think one of the few movies I saw in the early 70’s was the Poseidon Adventure….

Did you ever consider that maybe Chicken Little lives there? Also I wonder what the neighbors think…they must be just clucking with excitement over it!! Your post are always such fun to read…I always enjoy them!! 🙂

So glad you like the posts! It was so funny….my neighbor lady messaged me to tell me the chicken belonged to her dad! He saw a chicken just like this in Texas and bought himself one just like it. He also owns broiler houses and thought a huge chicken would be fitting.
