Hot Chocolate and Cold Wintry Days

Cup of Hot Chocolate & Mix.JPG

Today is a day for staying inside…..if you can. Fortunately, today I can stay inside; other than doing my chicken chores.  The girls do not require too much work at this time, other than feeding, watering, collecting eggs and keeping a path scooped through any snow that falls (they hate walking in snow), .

It sounds like the next few days, in our area, are just going to get colder and colder. The weather people are even telling us it will get to below zero wind chills the rest of this week. I am not looking forward to that at all! I can totally understand why some people flee this area in the winter and head south.

On days that are so cold the best thing you can do is “hunker down”. It is good to have some indoor projects to do on those days. With Christmas on it’s way; it is no problem finding things to do indoors.

The days are much easier to take when you are on the inside of your house looking out the windows. Being outside in this weather is really no fun at all. That wind actually hurts your face if you are out there too long.  Years ago a weatherman reminded us to forego our pierced earrings on those extremely cold days as they would just freeze our earlobes faster because of the metal.

I googled and found out it is only 97 days till Spring!!  Woo Hoo!! I told my husband this and he laughed……he informed me that technically it is not even winter yet.  Nuts…….that means there is still a lot of time for wind chills, ice, snow, snowdrifts, scooping snow, stoking the woodstove, scooping more snow, cold wind chills, scooping more snow…..you get the idea.  That TV program Survivor has nothing on us.

I have a feeling that surviving the winter is what makes the arrival of spring and summer so welcome. I also know that the older I get, it seems like the colder I get. Our folks used to tell us this and we never really believed them. Somewhere along the line they just keep getting wiser and wiser.

To make this season a little more bearable I  usually try to have some Hot Chocolate Mix on hand for the cold days. It is very easy to make and you end up with a large batch.

Hot Chocolate Mix
8 quart box powdered instant  non-fat milk

2 pound box Nestle’s Quik
2 cups powdered sugar
11 ounce powdered coffee creamer
In a large bowl mix all ingredients together.
Store in a covered container
Use 4 teaspoons to a mug of hot water.
(more or less  teaspoons to taste)

Making a batch of this might also be a great gift idea for a teacher, friend or someone you just want to give a little something too.  You could package it with a mug and some mints or marshmallows. I do know it also tastes wonderful with a little mint chocolate piece melted in your cup or if you put marshmallows in it.

There is really something very comforting about curling up in a blanket, sitting in your favorite rocking chair in front of the wood stove, with a cup of this hot chocolate in hand. If you manage to have a good book to go with this; the cold weather is not so hard to take. If you have a friend or your spouse sitting next to you, it is even better.

May the coming winter season treat you kindly and may you find blessings in the waiting for spring to return.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth,
for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:
it is the time for home.”

Edith Sitwell

(My blogging day mug was a birthday gift this year….pretty cool right?)

Edith is very wise. Love the blogging mug. Being in the south where those who flee flock to I am sorry the weather has turned cold. But you are right curl up with a cup of coco, a good book and a fuzzy blanket. I will think about you when I am sitting outside by the fire tonight. :-/

Below zero wind chill???!!! Help! We’ve been to Colorado several times for Christmas and I don’t think I have every been that cold…even in the mountains! I heard on the 6:00 news tonight that it may get up to near 80 degrees on Saturday, but close to 30 degrees Sunday afternoon! I thought surely that I misunderstood the weatherman…but, Mike says it is true! That is a fast drop in temperature. Crazy! I can picture you in front of your wood stove reading a book and drinking that hot chocolate. I have never thought of adding a chocolate mint! Thank you for the recipe!!! Yum!!!

When our sons were in grade school the fund raiser was always selling World’s Finest Chocolate candy bars and mints. I found out then that they were wonderful in a cup of hot chocolate.
Last week we were in the 40’s and even low 50’s……not so this week. Oh well……97 days to go :).

I feel sort of (but not really totally) guilty that I am hoping and praying for some snow this year!! However, one or two days would be enough! Our children also sold World’s Finest Chocolate candy bars for their elementary school! I don’t think that they ever sold mints! I am going to try mints in my hot chocolate right away. I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I might need even more calories today! Sure! Especially after the tree shaped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup that I devoured (by accident!) after dinner!

That reminds me of living in Wyoming with the below zero temperature and relentless wind. While it’s cold here, thankfully it’s not that cold! I remember all too well clearing out spaces for the chickens so their feet would not freeze in the snow. As well, I remember keeping them in fresh water instead of ice! Oh the joys of winter.

My mom used to make us that chocolate mix each winter. What a joy it was to drink on the snowy days and every other day as well!

I always made the hot chocolate in the summer also for camping weekends.

My husband took a popcorn tin, put a light bulb in it and my chicken waterer sits on top of that….no more frozen water!! Found that idea on Pinterest. I was so glad it actually worked because is saves a lot of time.

Now that is awesome! We had our roosters in their individual barrels (by this time we had well over 100). As long as they had snow to get to they would eat that for hydration and everyone got wet food as well. Wyoming chicken raising was a full-time job! I still can’t wait for Missouri chickens!

I love that blogging mug. We have so many mugs that John decreed (well, strongly suggested) I should buy no more. Today one Christmas mug broke as he was taking it out of the dishwasher. I was pleased that it was one I didn’t think was very pretty. If I am tempted to buy a beautiful one, I’ll just consider it a replacement.

that sounds like very logical thinking!!! My son and his girlfriend took my husband and me out for pizza on my birthday and this mug was part of my gift :). Must I find out where they got it so you can replace your broken mug with one like this?
I love the “decreed”….years ago I used to have a thing for bringing good sturdy boxes home from work. They just looked so usable. My husband also strongly suggested that I had enough and did not need to add to my box collection. I told him that at least it was a cheap collection to maintain. LOL

Oh you are speaking to my heart today. We received out first big snowfall of the season this week here in Toronto, Canada. It was a shock to the system. A hot chocolate was on my mind and then I opened your post. Perfect timing. Love. The mint addition – I’ll bet a drop of peppermint extract would work too. 🙂

Like this post very much – I can relate to everything you mentioned. Use to make that hot chocolate mix all the time. Do not know why I got out of the habit. Love your blogging cup. Old age does hurt much more in the winter. Lol Like the quote at the end of your post. Stay warm! 🙂

I like snow much better than extreme cold weather. When they come at the same time…not fun.
I laughed when I pictured you yelling SNOW!! I must admit that when it was snowing big old flakes the other day it was beautiful.

We love snow down here too because for the most part it doesn’t last long. One of the most fun snows happen at my 9th grade Valentine dance.Because I was on the council I got to help decorate and the snow moving in just made everything perfect. On Thursday I hope to blog about snow in a different case. I have so much trouble typing …we will see how it turns out.

That sounds properly parky! Definitely weather for staying indoors, preferably watching an old movie. Sounds so cold you might need to bring the chickens in too!

I watched It’s a Wonderful Life last week. Haven’t seen it in years and forgotten just how good it is! I haven’t seen the other one at all. Is it Charlie Brown as in Peanuts? If so I REALLY need to see that too!

LOVE the sound of the chocolate … but have to admit that I’m a total soft thing for drinking chocolate made by Hotel Chocolat. It’s HEAVENLY.

The blogging mug ….. Ohhh I’m either going to find myself one, or I’m going to paint myself one. (The latter is the most likely). LOVE IT. What a great gift. Late Birthday Wishes.

We skipped playgroup today because it is just too cold. So, kids are resting (one sleeping and one in her ‘jammies’ with a blanket watching a learning show) and I am loading up on my coffee with cocoa in it! 😀
