Lessons From Geese

img_3011-geese

The past few days have been unusual with our very warm weather. It has been a wonderful reprieve from the cold days that we had in January. The last few days we have even heard flocks of geese as they fly over our farm on their journey north.

It is hard to believe that the geese are already migrating. This is really early for them to be moving that direction again. It makes me wonder how long it will be before they are thinking they may have left those warmer areas a little too fast.

I love the wild sound of those flocks as they fly overhead. It is usually that wild cry that alerts us to their presence. Once you hear it, you start looking up till you finally locate them. Sometimes they are just small groups of a dozen or so. At times they are so large they have several V formations within V formations.

I am amazed at the instinct these birds have in knowing when it is time to hit the migration trail. Year after year, they unfailingly take wing and go when the time is right. Year after year they follow that age-old path to get to the same location as they were the year before.  Against all odds they  manage to make that same trek over and over.

There is a great comfort in the constancy of the geese as they migrate. It is wonderful to know that even though this world may be in an uproar…..the geese still fly when it is time to go.  They do not take their cues from man-made circumstances. They go when it is time….no matter what; because that is what geese were made to do.

There is a lot to be learned from geese I think. They are not swayed by circumstances and opinions. They do not try to be something they are not. They stick together so their journey is easier.  Just think if we were not swayed by the opinions of people who care nothing for us. What would happen if we did not worry about being good enough? What would this world look like if we stuck together and loved each other enough to help each other through this journey called life?

What if…..against all odds….we stayed true to being who God made us to be and we stayed focused on the business that He has given us to do? I cannot speak for anyone else….but I am thinking that would be a mighty fine thing.

May you have a blessed weekend and enjoy the things that God has put in your path . May you find something to marvel at in the days ahead. I pray that someone is placed before you and you are given an opportunity to love, serve and help…… and may your life be filled with simple pleasures like geese flying overhead.

We are far South of you. Hundreds of Geese have been flying over us going North, some just yesterday. They are extremely early, but smarter than us – they know when to migrate. Gorgeous birds. Yes, we need to stay true to God and focus on what pleases Him..

I’d love to witness something like this. Being a townie I am more likely to see helicopters than wildlife! I have been hearing the small birds a bit more in the last few days though. A great sign that spring is coming! Your post was beautifully written, by the way!

One of the coolest things my husband and I did with our sons when they were young was the year we took them to a place called Missouri Valley. There is a wildlife refuge there and in the fall when the geese migrate they land there to rest and eat. We went to see them and could not believe how many there were and how many varieties there were. The noise of honking geese was amazing.

I love how you always look past the circumstance and dig for the lessons. Something we have in common. 🙂 Love what you said about not being swayed. Definitely a thought provoking post. Love to hear those geese fly over. Wonder if they’re the same ones you see!

    Faye,
I loved the life lesson that you put in your post. It is true – life is so much easier and less stressful if we are who were created to be, instead of being someone who our family wants us to be. We will never satisfy anyone else but God is satisfied with us as we are.
I often think that a lot of us are actors, putting on a mask through life. Where do you think we take the masks off- probably not even at home ? But God knows our inner selves.
The geese take their routines for granted and they follow their heart and what they feel in their bones- perhaps we should too.

another favorite!-I have wondered if maybe the purpose of life, could be to discover yourself with complete truth and realise that what we were meant to do according to our strengths and passions-is just perfect and the world needs what we have. well the geese post is lovely and reminded me of that idea. thank you!

Hello, Nice to read such a relaxing string of messages. I live northwest of Atlanta in Dallas, Ga. I can tell you that for two weeks we have been seeing geese flying north in groups as small as three to counts ranging 50-70. They are headed home so keep your eyes to the sky.

I love this lesson! Maybe I’ll look into being a goose for a while (except the going north part) !! Just need to be who God made me to be!!

Our trees here are budding and I have flowers in bloom! Don’t know what they are, but they are pretty yellow things!

I am sure you will have gorgeous flowers where you are! I know everytime I go to Missouri I love how lush it looks.
I think you are doing a great job of being who God wants you to be. I love your blog for it’s honesty in the struggle of doing exactly that. You are an inspiration to me and so many others…and I think that is exactly what God wants. you to be.

I think I will spent a little more time outside from now on. My late husband ( not use to say that just yet) would just wait for the fly overs and come in asking, Did you hear them? No….with the noise of modern life I couldn’t ,but just maybe I’ll spend a little more time outside this Spring.

Oh Beverly I think it would be so hard to say those words…..I will pray for you …not that those words get easier but that the memories of the good times come back to sustain you through the hard times and that God is close enough that you know He is there.
My husband does the same thing and comes running in to let me know if there is some cool wildlife going by or sitting somewhere that I can get a photo of them.
Take the time to sit outside this Spring and just enjoy.

I always wonder how the geese decide who the leader will be and if they take turns. You are right…we need to listen to God telling us the path for our lives. I have so many avenues that I would like to try out that I do not always listen carefully enough to where He is leading me. My mind seems to always be thinking…who? what? when? where? why? how?. I think that I am just a planner and a planner is always looking for the next project. Maybe I need for the next project to find me or perhaps I should just be content to appreciate my blessings!

I think God made us to be planners. I just need to remember in my planning to ask if this is really the plan He wants me to be working on. It would be so much handier if He would just send a memo, write it on the wall or something to let me know…….though maybe He has and I was to busy to be listening?
