Not All That Glitters…..

kaboom-game

It may be true that “Not all that glitters is gold.” I think the reverse is also true….Not all gold is something that glitters. I have no idea if that makes any sense whatsoever…..it just sounded kind of profound.

I have many things in life that are really pure gold….family and friends being at the top of the list. My daughter-in-law posted the picture of the two grandkids on Facebook the other day. It just made my day to see those two little ones.

They are the real gold in my life. Those two bring such a joy to life. Everything they do is done with everything they have. They really know how to live life to the full and they sparkle from the inside out.

I did have to do some questioning about the Kaboom game after seeing the photo. I first thought they were knocking down the blocks with marshmallows. Turns out those are white painted blocks…..which is a good thing; as I am not sure about the shelf life of a game that would use marshmallows as game pieces.

I digress (which I often do). I also have some amazing friends. One of them truly does glitter! We have often called her the glitter queen. Wherever she goes she has a sparkle about her….literally. I should explain. She is a craft wizard and loves….(did I say loves?) to use glitter. There are times her husband even sparkles. (I am not so sure how impressed he is with the thought of sparkling.)

There is a down side to glitter. Once it gets loose in your home it attaches itself to everything. My daughter-in-law once gave me a Christmas present wrapped in beautiful paper that had glittery snowflakes on it. It did not take long and everything and everyone had a slight sparkle to and on them….maybe more than a slight sparkle. It was actually quite wonderful in a Christmas sparkly kind of way.

My daughter-in-law started to snicker and informed me that the clerk who had sold her the paper explained to her about glitter.  According to him, and I quote, “Glitter is the herpes of the craft world…….once you have it…..you can never get rid of it.” That is a quote that has firmly planted itself in my brain. It comes to mind every time I see a tube of glitter, a card with glitter or anything sparkly and glitter related. That quote is somewhat like glitter….I don’t think I will ever be able to erase it!

I am so glad that there is so much more to my family and friends than just temporary , external sparkle. They are “Real” and their beauty and worth comes from who they are inside and not what they look like outside. They are beautiful, wonderful people….inside and out.

I pray that you have a friend or family member who sparkles and shines from the inside. I pray this friend or family member spreads a little “internal glitter” over your life and brings you joy. I also pray that you, in turn, spread a little glitter over those around you.

“Consider the fact that maybe…just maybe…
beauty and worth aren’t found in a makeup bottle,
or a salon-fresh hairstyle, or a fabulous outfit.
Maybe our sparkle comes from somewhere deeper inside,
somewhere so pure and authentic and REAL,
it doesn’t need gloss or polish or glitter to shine.”

I love it! Oh the joys of modern technology and social media! I got to write letters to my grandparents. But we visited every couple of months or so.

As for glitter, I’m glitter free at the moment.

Beautiful post, so very very true. Golden moments that can only be preserved in the mind (and maybe with a camera) are just so wonderful, and we sometimes don’t realise until afterwards. I captured my mum and my daughter walking down the the lane holding hands with my camera and that photo warms my heart in a way I can’t quite describe. Glitter is just an added bonus! (As it happens my daughter’s pumpkin dress left glitter at her granny’s house!)

    Hello wonderful Chicken.
I love you, (but then you know that)… and I love this post so very much.
It’s ‘you’. From the start to the end, it’s all ‘you’. Each word is one which comes from that sparkly place in your heart, and your soul.

All the love which is written in between each word and each line, is spectacularly sparkly and (again) comes from your heart, and your soul.

I can totally relate to your Grandchildren being your joy. Little Cobs (Grandson) is mine. He is my sparkle. And, like you say, everything he does is done with everything he has and he sparkles from the inside. You can see his sparkle clear as clear can be, if you look into his eyes.

Thank you for this beautiful post Chicken. It’s warmed me from the inside. And that is where it counts.
Sending love and squidges ~ Cobs. x ❤

No.. just enough to make him pull the face I know he’ll pull. LOL.

He was leaning over the back of my chair as I read him your post. (I loved the post so much that I just had to share it with him). When I came to comment, I tapped it out and clicked to ‘send’ it and it was then he said: “Sparkly is spelled S.P.A.R.K.L.E.Y” … I pulled my Elvis face and said “Really? Oh heck, I’d better say that then. I could have sworn it was s.p.a.r.k.l.y, with no E. [long sigh] … aw, everyone’s going to think I’m a complete numbskull!”

After I added the bit about my mother being disappointed in me, there was this little feeling inside me that told me to go and check that spelling…. so I did. I then saw Mr.Cobs laughing to himself, over on the sofa.

“Ohhh you beastly thing! It doesn’t have an E!!! Oh, you’ve made me look a proper turkey now! I’m going to tell Chicken what you’ve done!” So I did. LOL

He’s such a teasepot. I’ve only ever managed to ‘get him’ once. But I shall continue to try. lol.

This made me laugh for many reasons! First I also read your posts to Chicken Grandad. Second Chicken Grandad is a teaser as well though he would never presume to spellcheck me…..he spells phonetically so his spelling gets fairly interesting. I however would not argue with his math skills as he far exceeds me there. Third, I don’t know if I have ever “gotten” Chicken Grandad. I have startled him stunned him, made him shoot coffee through his nostrils ….but never pulled one over on him that I can recall. Nuts. I will have to try harder.

Love love those grandkids! For some reason I thought of you when I was pondering the Kaboom game and the possibility they had used marshmallows for game pieces. Perhaps, because I think our minds might operate in the same way? We are curious and just have enquiring minds?

I do not buy anything with glitter. Your grandchildren are precious. Yes, true beauty comes from within a person. The makeup companies, hair salons, and jewelry stores would go broke if all their customers were like me. A wonderful post Faye – you keep us all grounded about what is important in this life. xoxo

Glitter monster here! Honestly, if I had a pound for every time someone has pointed out a speck of the stuff on my nose, or eyelash, well I’d be able to buy a lot more glitter with the proceeds! I have gone to work, shopping, and even a hospital appointment with an unwitting fleck or two about my person!

I like glitter and I like make-up and I like haircuts and I like nail polish and I like silver jewelry. However… I don’t want glitter in the house…only at school where someone else could try to get it cleaned up after my failed attempts. I just like to look at make-up. I want someone to tell me what to do with it. I like to cut my own bangs and the sides of my hair so I that I can hear the hair stylist fuss at me when I show up every five or six months. I simply buy nail polish because the colors are pretty. It really is a lot of trouble to put on. I really, really, really like silver jewelry…especially bracelets. I will even wear a bracelet if I am at the farm offering my useless help. I do not like dangly earrings. Dangly is spelled incorrectly. Cob’s husband needs to get onto this problem. What I actually do like are bright colors, friends who laugh with me, shopping at craft stores, looking (just looking) at embroidery machines that I truly would like to purchase even though I do know how to work them, playing card games and domino games with a group of friends, Bruno Mars because I think he is a throwback to another era and I like his smile, enchiladas, player pianos and…writing (I love to write!). And I like your so very appropriate and carefully selected quotes. And I like you, of course!

I also love jewelry. I have found a great source of reasonable priced jewelry from a gal at our church, “Walk By Faith” jewelry. I do like dangly earring though….might be a throwback to the 70’s? Yes I do think Mr. Cobs should check our spelling (maybe….would he tell us the truth?) I also trim my bangs between haircuts as I am too tight to pay to have it cut more than every 6 month….however last time she left my bangs long and they are driving me nuts so I may have to go back. I love craft stores, antique shops and playing games also! (though when it comes to cards I need to play a few rounds to get the hang of it again.) I love Adele’s voice. And I am quite sure that we must be sisters or at least cousins!

I love when the glitter gets all over…it just makes everything seem magical. It’s a shame that we are taught to leave our childlike selves behind as we grow older. I’ve decided that that’s a mistake and so I am now embracing the “child” in me and rejoicing right out loud at what pleases me in that moment. Just as a youngster would do…it’s so good for the soul! Your grandchildren are adorable…so happy they bring you much joy!! 🙂
