What does one do on a snow day when you have already read all the books that you have in your home and the library is 10 miles away through horizontal snow? Last week I had this problem. (I did have work I could have done…..and yes, I did do some of it.)
I also chose to start a puzzle. Winter is the perfect time to start a puzzle…at least I think so. And since winter decided to show up again, I thought it was the prime time to get one started. My husband helps occasionally but typically leaves it up to me. The puzzle I am working on is 1000 pieces and is a Thomas Kincaid picture.
When working a puzzle, I tend to start by finding all the outside edge pieces. I wonder if this is typical? I think I would find it impossible to fix if I had to start with one of the center pieces. I like having the edges as a boundary.
There is something about fixing puzzles that makes me think of living life. Life is made up of so many colorful pieces that don’t always seem to go together. When all those pieces are in the box it can look like a mess and a hodgepodge of mismatched bits and a swirl of colors. It is a great help to see the picture on the lid so you know what the finished product should look like and where all those colors fit in.
I have no idea what the finished picture of my life looks like. I just know there are a lot of little pieces that make up my life. I also realize that I haven’t even seen all the pieces that are still to be used to fix my life puzzle. They are somewhere in that box labeled “Chicken Grandma”.
It takes the Master to take those pieces out of the box and slowly begin putting them together. He takes the colors and all those crazy shaped pieces and places them just so in my life to make a beautiful picture of Grace. He makes order and beauty out of a box of pieces that seem so random, but are not really random at all.
I am so glad He has the lid to the puzzle box that is my life and He knows exactly what that life will look like when it has been completed. I only get to see the portions that He has already put together for me.
It is amazing to me when looking at the parts of my life that are already pieced together what a picture of blessing my life really is. Even the pieces that are dark and gloomy looking are just a part of a much bigger beautiful picture, that all speak grace and love.
I am wondering if the puzzle that is our lives actually has those finished edges that I like to start with. Or, do you think maybe our life puzzles just fit and intertwine with the next persons puzzle and their puzzle fits with the next and so on? I kind of hope so. I love the thought that we are all part of a bigger picture that takes all of our pieces to finish.
I love all those pieces that represents the friends and family that are part of my life. You all make my life so much richer and add so much color. And yes some of you add a little craziness and so much fun! You also add so much blessing. May you be blessed in return.
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:13-16
NIV
Love your insight. Life certainly is similar to puzzles. Some pieces fit, some have to get moved just so to fit. How much snow did you get? We had some beautiful flakes, but nothing stayed.

We only got a few inches. I was so grateful. I think the storm tracked further south that us. Most of our snow is now gone as the sun came out yesterday and melted a bunch of it. This is a great way to have snow.

I had a student tell me once that he never, ever finished a puzzle by himself. He liked to find a friend to help him because that made it more fun! He could not stop telling me about it, so he also told me that he would rather choose a girl to help! The reason…they are smart and pretty and sit still better than boys! And…that boys are supposed to know how to choose partners who are helpers! How did he know that? At the time…I thought…what profound words from a six year old. Wisdom from the little children! And wisdom from you…made my night complete!!

LOL. I was picturing a teenage boy till I got to the end! Yes most little girls seem to sit quieter than little boys…..unless they are my granddaughter who never sits still unless you are reading a book to her.
Lots of wisdom from a 6 year old. We should listen more to them.

Lovely post and I love the analogy too, both reassuring and comforting…once you’ve found all the straight edges! 🙂 x

I love my borders and my puzzle box lid so I know what it going on. I guess that is why life is all about faith. You never know quite what is going to happen on any given day cause God has the lid to my box.

Faye,
I love that you think life is a crossword puzzle with the master key in the hands of our God- the lid of the puzzle with the picture in his hands- wow ! He must have millions of them with him and whoa, how does he sort out each one to his puzzle or does he get mixed up ? I like to think of him as partly human and more divine of course, because he has the power to put the right piece in the right slot. We try to push the pieces of our life puzzle this way and that in our quest to put things right for ourselves, instead of allowing him to play the game on our behalf.
Wow. I loved the post Faye.
Hope you got the puzzle completed and with your husband’s help. I am trying to imagine the two of you on the floor together trying to put this puzzle together and then I remember he may not be able sit on the floor, so perhaps you are both at your dining table with the puzzle set in front of you and a bright fire burning in the background and some hot cocoa with marshmallows in them for a drink.

Love your imagery on the puzzle Susie! Beautiful. and yes, I must confess, I like to try move my own pieces around to a slot I think they should be……I should know better by now that, that rarely works out.
I have the puzzle on a large board so I can move it around to where we want to work on it. That way we don’t have to sit on the floor :).

Another beautiful post! The people I worked puzzles with ALWAYS started with the outside. We’re human so we start with what we see easily. Maybe, to stretch your analogy a bit, we work on what we can see. God waits patiently for us to accept his gift of faith and helps us get the inside right.

You are so right Anne! Perhaps He gives us enough pieces to keep us busy….maybe so we won’t get into so much trouble?

My husband and I have put 3 puzzles together this winter – it is so relaxing and helps pass the long dreary days of winter. I have to put the outer edges together first – this gives me the framework to begin the total picture. Life is a puzzle and only God can finish that puzzle Faye. A great post. Your words make for some deep thought on my part. xoxo

Maybe that is why I like puzzles. It gives me a chance to sit quietly and ponder God, life and how it all fits together.
I am impressed! Three puzzles.

Love jig-saw puzzles. Try to find the most difficult puzzles possible. 1,000 to 1,500 pieces.

with you all the way on looking for the big ones! I had a friend that years ago found a 3000 piece puzzle! It was huge.

There you go again with your wonderful analogies. I think that our puzzles definitely intertwine with the puzzles of others. What a wonderful way to think of it. No person is an island as they say. Our actions always effect others. 🙂

I liked the idea of our puzzles linking up with others also. You are so right none of us are islands….we do all affect each other.

LOVE this beautiful blog post. It’s so rich and so full with love, life, experience … and a conversation with God.
Where-as you have a puzzle, with me – I see my life here on Earth as a Tapestry. I get to stitch in a colour of wool using a wide eyed, large but blunt ended sewing needle.
I can see a small section of the tapestry – the bit I’m working on and a little of the surrounding area – but I never get to see the whole tapestry or even how much is left to still ‘fill in’.
But I know that one day, when I’m eventually called home, I shall be stood with The Lord, continuing the magnificent conversation I have continually going inside my head, and then He will turn me around and I’ll get to see my Tapestry of Life. I’ll see all of the colours I stiched and sewed, and how each colour works alongside another colour, … and I’ll see how those colours relate to something which happened or an encounter I had with someone and how that encounter changed my life, and theirs. It will, in essence, tell the story of my life.
I’m hoping that my tapestry is pleasing to Him, and that it shows I tried. And I hope that I have filled every space and that there are no gaps, for I haven’t ever wanted to fail Him, or disappoint Him.
But, going back to your jigsaw.. . . in your post you said:… “some of you add a little craziness and so much fun” . . . I’m the crazy, aren’t I?! Go on, you can tell everyone. I’ll own up to being crazy. I’m not blind to my faults. lol ❤
I loved your post from start to finish. It spoke of you and it came from your heart. I could feel the love and the joy, and also the hopes which reside within your heart.
It is your essence. Essence of Chicken… ah, nooooo that doesn’t sound at all right! Essence of F___. But it’s not a perfume, it is an essence of your heart, your soul, your world. It’s perfection. …. as are you.
May your essence continue and may you stick around for an awfully long time to share your essence with everyone. Family, friends and crazy blogging pals.

Oh Cobs! Craziness is not a fault. I think it is one of God’s good blessings….the ability to see life a little off-center and skewed…..and then laugh about it. And yes you and I are so blessed that way…as are many of our friends and blog friends.
I love your tapestry analogy. My Grandpa used to do latch hook rugs and it reminds me of that.
Lots and lots of love and squidges going your way.

Enjoyed every piece. You have given me thoughts to ponder. Yes, I always begin with framing my puzzle and work from there. That work s for me and find that my puzzle people like the same framework. Your puzzle is golden lovely.

It is going to be a beautiful puzzle when done! I must confess I do get slightly obsessed with fixing when I start one though. It also gives me time to ponder life.

What a good analogy! I am an edge pieces first person. Although owning a cat and completing a jigsaw are totally incompatible. bits get stolen, eaten, end up under the washing machine…

When we used to fix puzzles when I was a kid we had two cats. For some reason they always thought their job was to lay down on top of the puzzle, bat at the puzzle pieces and yes carry the pieces off to be chewed or who knows what.

Yes, definitely a cat or jigsaw decision has to be made. Some clever person should devise one that is cat proof! Mention it to your husband….

lol. My sister finally got one of these puzzle cloths where you fix your puzzle on it and can roll it up when not fixing. She probably locked the cats out of the room when she was fixing???

I’m not a puzzle person except to say that I have possibly puzzled a few people in my lifetime.
Anyway, I like how you can take simple everything things and turn them into life lessons. It amazes me how talented you are. I could never look at a fence and make it relatable to life but I’m sure you could!
I’m never gonna look at a puzzle the same way 😊

LOL Aimee, I have also been puzzled and puzzled more than a few people! It does keep life interesting anyway.
Hmmmmm now you have me pondering the fence thing. Maybe down the road somewhere that will have to pop up on a blog.
I have always loved puzzles, crosswords, Wheel of Fortune.

I am not a puzzle person, but I definitely enjoyed the analogy. If only I could see the finished product of my life, I think I will live a bit more differently. I only get to see pieces, so I learn to trust the One who’s got the finished whole picture. Thanks so much for sharing
