Promises of Spring

Flax

The last couple weeks in our area have been dreary, gray, chilly and wet. Today we finally broke out of that pattern and ended up with temps in the 50’s, sun and beautiful weather. It was the perfect day to wander around outside and just suck up some of the wonderful, warm sunshine.

A part of the afternoon was spent, head bent down, searching to see if any little purple violets have decided to make an appearance. I didn’t find any of those, but I did head back for the camera because when I strolled past my flower garden (which at times can also be known as a weed garden) I noticed the little green shoots of my flax plant trying to break through.

I began to dig through some of last years growth and the old leaves and discovered that the sedum, iris, and a few other things were also beginning to pop through the dark wet soil. It did my heart good to see these small promises of spring. It also did my heart good to just be outside and absorb the smells of spring, the sound of birds and the feel of warm sunshine.

I love this time of year…..it is so full of promise. After a long winter (which has it’s own beauty) it is like a revival to see the green shoots of plants and grasses make their way from their winter’s sleep. I am filled with hope when I see those green shoots coming up through the debris of last years plants……hope that life continues even when things looks dreary and dead. Hope of the promise of new life that chooses it’s own time to reveal itself.

My husband pointed out a pair of cardinals that were dancing through the bare trees. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera on hand at that point! The brilliant red was such a contrast to the brown of the bare branches. It reinforced the idea that life has so much beauty so close to what appears to be dead, brittle and ugly.

In looking closer at the branches of a tree in the backyard I discovered that the leaf buds are starting to swell with new life…..another promise in the process of being fulfilled.

Promise of Life

Life, like the swelling buds on the tree is full of hope if you just take the time to search. Sometimes the search is harder than others to find that small grain of hope and life. Sometimes, it seems to take more than one lifetime to see and feel that hope that brings a sweet breath of freshness into your soul.

Hope and Life, like the seasons, are on their own timetable…..they will not be hurried or wished into being. They will arrive at their appointed time and the older I get the more I am finding out……that timetable is perfect. I am also finding out that life without hope is stark and meaningless.  Maybe that is why all the little promises of Spring speak to my heart and soul.  It is a tangible reminder that life wins, hope springs eternal and God is good.

For behold, the winter is past;
the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth,
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
Song of Solomon 2:11-12 ESV

    Faye,
What a beautiful post, so full of hope. I am so thankful you wrote this. As I write this my eyes are filling with tears for my daughter has been crying last night, worried that she is gaining weight and that there is more facial hair and body hair than last week. ( She was diagnosed to have polycystic ovarian disease) . She is worried she might have had a recurrence.
Thank you for your post of hope and of new beginnings. I am feeling like God spoke to me through your words.

You are so welcome Susie! I am so glad to be a hope giver. Your daughter is beautiful in God’s eyes and His timing is perfect for what we are going through. We might not always see that….I know I have to intentionally look sometimes to see what He is trying to show me and to see the hope He gives. My prayers are with you!

There is nothing more cheery than Cardinals! We have them here in Arizona, but I will miss them when I get back to Alberta. They never venture that far north!

So glad little touches of Spring are starting in your area. Spring is a time of renewing the soul for sure. Our Spring is moving right along. Tomorrow evening more bad storms, but that is Spring. Take care, enjoy the sun. xoxo

I have just had to take my keyboard away from the cat – I think he was trying to send you a message! Yes, Spring is definitely on the way here too and we have had some lovely sunshine. It just makes such a difference to people!

Laughed about the cat! When our sons were at home we always seemed to have a house cat that was supposed to be a farm cat but somehow ended up indoors. They always wanted to lay on the keyboard.
I am going to enjoy the sun today as they tell us more gray tomorrow….that would be spring in Iowa!

Astonishingly for the UK, we are predicted 20 degrees Celsius (high 60s in Fahrenheit) for Thursday this week!! It won’t last though!! Take care of yourself. Xx

What a beautiful post! When I lived back east, my favorite season was always spring and my favorite holiday was Easter – for all the same reasons. New life, hope…. I still love spring, but it’s not as dramatic here in Los Angeles… are you feeling better?

Each Spring I yearn for the colour of new fresh greens sprouting around the garden…I’m never disappointed (though the wait can vary each year) It’s always a great sign of new beginnings and much colourful pleasure to follow! A lovely post and great to see you enjoying warmer tempt too 😉

It is so exciting to dig through last year’s growth to find the plants pushing through. I have to resist clearing that off for a bit yet as we could still dip below freezing at this time of year. For now I will just content myself with pushing it aside and smiling at the new growth…..then covering it back up.

I completely precipitate needing to keep the protective barrier…’just in case of frost’….but, knowing those vibrant new growth shoots are there is worth the wait too 😉 Happy Days!!

The husband is at a farm sale today. It is too early to plant around here yet as we could get some night of frost. It is hard to be patient when the weather gets so nice though!
Hopefully next week on Good Friday I will get my potatoes in…..that is kind of our tradition. I have had the tops freeze off before and they have been snowed on but they always bounce back!
I am liking the book reading idea!
