Signs of Spring

IMG_3268 Apple Blossoms

“It is spring again.
The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

It feels like it is officially Spring now!  The apple trees are in full bloom and are absolutely beautiful. It is hard for me to imagine how one tree can be covered by so many blossoms at the same time.

I have to keep reminding myself that these blossoms should be enjoyed fully right now. Like so many things in life, they will not last. It won’t be long and a breeze will pluck them from the tree and they will float down in a soft rain of pink petals. They might be fleeting, but they are truly a wonderful gift while they last.

I decided to take advantage of the gift and took the time to wander through my backyard and see what other signs of spring I could find. It was kind of a mini scavenger hunt and it was a refreshment for the soul.

The other day my husband discovered this robin’s nest in one of our White Pine evergreen trees. I thought, as the nest was not so far up the tree, I should attempt to capture a picture of them before they get to big.

Mama Robin was not really impressed with me getting close enough to photograph them. In fact I think I made her downright crabby! She kept a very watchful eye on me from her perch on my garden fence and the minute I backed away she went right back to the nest to make sure everything was okay.

One of my favorite perennials around here is the bleeding heart bush I planted two years ago. It was a tiny slip of a plant when I put it in the ground. I remember putting a small fence around it to protect it from the rabbits and the chickens.  I babied that plant along with the hope that it would survive and someday bloom.

The rabbits probably would have eaten it if they had a chance and the chickens definitely would have scratched around the plant and totally destroyed it. (Things you learn living out here!) It is best not to leave tender seedlings exposed to rabbits and chickens.

I kind of think I love bleeding hearts because they are such an old fashioned flower. They are a plant I remember my Grandma having in her flower garden. It is also great it is a perennial…..I love the fact they come back year after year. There is something comforting about a plant that keeps coming back even after the harsh Iowa winters.

When you look at a  field of dandelions you can either see a hundred weeds or a hundred wishes  – Unknown

There is one other “perennial” that we seem to have in abundance……the Dandelion. For many years I fought a battle with those bright yellow flowers. I tried spraying them, digging them out and mowing them off….constantly. Nothing stopped them from coming back.

Since those years I have come to a truce with the dandelion. I discovered one morning while pondering those dandelions that is was better to let them grow. I found that my lawn was filled with bright yellow gold finches. They were feasting on the dandelions that had gone to seed.

I decided at that time that I would never have a lawn that makes the front cover of a landscape magazine. I also decided that if I couldn’t have that kind of lawn I would have one that invited wildlife to come and have some lunch. To be very honest it was much more fun watching all those finches hopping around my yard than it would have been to see only green smooth grass.

I have also seen magazine articles about all the wonderful things you can do with a dandelion…..I have not tried any of them….yet. They say (I am not sure who “they” are) that you can eat the leaves in salads. I do wonder if they would taste good or if they would be kind of bitter?  I also have a friend who has made dandelion wine. (I do wonder how many blossoms she had to pick to make that gallon of wine.)

Those yellow blooms bring back great childhood memories of picking fistfuls to bring to my mom. The downside of that was that our hands were stained for days with the stuff that oozed out of those stems and onto our hands. Fortunately, as a kid, we were not too concerned with dirty stained hands.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to look at that bright yellow bloom and let your mind wander back to that time called childhood. What brings back those wonderful childhood memories for you? For me it is Spring with it’s yellow dandelions and the wonder of blue robin’s eggs hatching into baby birds.

The day the Lord created hope
was probably the same day he created Spring.

    Faye,
Great post about spring and a positive thought for today- that we can expect cycles to go on and round and round and that we don’t need to get frustrated when things don’t go our way. There will be an end and a new beginning too.
Loved the robin nest picture and the yellow dandelions- I often wished I could grow dandelions to be able to eat their leaves in a salad.
I am so glad there are people like you in the world who keep the old times with us as real as when we remember them from our childhood.
For me childhood and spring was hearing the cows mooing to be milked and the chickens cackling for food.

Have you had dandelion leaves before Susie? I am wondering what they actually taste like.
I lived on the edge of a small town with a farm right down the road so we got to hear cows mooing also!
Love the cycles of the seasons….such a reminder of faithfulness….love the thought you wrote about an end and a beginning.

    Neat post, Faye.

I am with you 100% on the lawn. Our back yard abuts a lake access, so I don’t put any chemicals whatsoever on it to avoid runoff. It is pretty scraggly looking at times so I keep it mowed fairly short. But boy does the wildlife love it! We enjoy looking out to see who or what is feeding each morning. We have a wood duck pair that cruise the yard every day. She is getting ready to lay eggs we think. Her big belly almost drags along the ground. He stands a dutiful watch while she gorges. He is beautiful. Can’t wait to see the chicks.

    Enjoy your spring fest!

We put up a wood duck box a couple years ago. One year we actually had a pair that hatched ducklings. The next year a kestrel took over it. And last year a flicker decided it wanted it for a home. For some reason it is empty so far this year. Hope we get something in it more than just a squirrel or starlings!

I love your photography skills. Capturing the baby birds in the nest is impressive, I would have been too scared to get near it. Looks like you’re able to enjoy some nice weather there. My sister lives in Denver and just got hit with a hail storm, she may have lost her rhubarb (she makes all kinds of things with it)
I’ve always loved dandelions and how they add such a pretty color of yellow to the yard. Is it weird that they are one of my favorites?

I am grateful for digital cameras! You just keep clicking till you get a good one.
We saw the Denver hail storm on the news last night! That looks awful. Hail can really ruin things in a big hurry.
Not weird at all to love dandelions. They are so incredibly cheerful.

This really is the most beautiful post, Chicken. It’s ‘engaging’ from the start, and spoke directly to my heart. So so lovely that I didn’t want it to end.

With regard to the Dandelions … maybe, if you fancied trying them, you could try pulling a few petals out and eating those first, so that you got an idea of the taste of those. Then if you like the taste of the petals, you could try a bit more by trying a different part of the flower. Trying a bit at a time. Maybe that would work. 🙂
BUT … do a Google check on what you want to eat (be it ANY flower), to make sure that you’ll be eating safely.

    Fabulous post Chicken …. love ~ Cobs. x ❤

    Beautiful babies!

We have a few nests springing up on our patch of soil. The resident blackbird is throwing a canon ball of indignation at any interlopers and they just form a very unorderly queue on the fence whilst they squabble about whose turn it is to distract him long enough for the rest to get to the bird table 😀

The bees do need all the help they can get! That is why I don’t kill the white clover in one area of the lawn. My son in Lincoln is learning how to take care of bees and work with hives….I told him that is good because then he can teach me!

Oh good. It is hard ,hot work but well worth the effort. Today we have to stay on top to keep them alive. All this over head spraying is knocking them out pretty fast. The people we buy from lost 1/2 of their hives in one field.

I love bleeding hearts too. Dandelions I have not yet grown to love. I have a fond memory of my grandson at a very young age, picking a fistful of them in the outfield of his first little league game. Apparently he had nothing else to do .

Your grandson sounds like my oldest son. When he played basketball in grade school he would stand and visit with the guy he should have been guarding. He never was a “star” at it but he sure made a lot of good friends from different schools.

I like your ‘live and let live’ approach to a dandelion. Everything has a purpose. Except wasps. They can take a running jump… Ooh but the robin hatchlings are so, so very cute.
