This past weekend started in typical Spring busy fashion. My husband was trying to beat the forecasted rain by getting his soybean fields disked and planted by noon on Saturday. The rain forecast was not the only reason for the deadline…..some was due to kids coming home for the weekend…… He got the beans planted with time to spare….a little time.
Once the planting was done; there was time to visit with the kids, grill burgers for the noon meal, play legos with the grandson, set up tea parties for the granddaughter and get ready and out the door for a bride/groom shower for a nephew and his fiancée that evening. It was a busy day, but it was a great kind of busy!
Sunday was one of the sweetest I have known in a long time……I got to sit in church; next to my kids and my grandkids. There is not much sweeter in life than a wiggly grandchild sitting on your lap in church. True….it is hard to listen to the pastor….with all the shushing going on and the distractions…but it is sweet indeed.
I had decided I wanted to try get pictures of the grandkids after church, as it was a beautiful day. I had to convince my granddaughter that taking her picture was a grand idea. She was not convinced till I resorted to bribery……spoonfuls of chocolate frosting are a wonderful enticement for photo ops.
It didn’t take long and the rest of our children arrived for Sunday dinner. It was such a blessing to have them all around the table. The laughter, good-natured teasing, re-hashing of old memories, and good food was such a treat for this mom. There is not much I treasure more than sitting and watching my family enjoy being together.
We did have to venture outside after dinner as it became time for the “Big Reveal”. (I am learning that “reveals” are the new thing as a way to tell people what gender your child will be.) My youngest son had told me last week that they needed lots of space for the reveal they had planned.
I knew my sons like to shoot clay pigeons so I had a feeling this reveal would involve shooting some type of target….I just wasn’t totally sure what. I found out soon that it would also involve a lot of noise!
My son had found the idea on the internet that you put either pink or blue chalk powder in a box with tannerite. When you shoot it…..it makes an incredible amount of noise and it sends up a huge cloud of the appropriately colored powder. It brings to mind 4th of July fireworks!
I must admit….it was impressive and it was a lot of fun finding out we were going to have a new grandson come September.
The day was capped off with finishing up the leftover cupcakes from the shower the night before. There was more laughter, more planning for future gatherings, more fun in just being together for a few more minutes, before they all had to get on the road and head for home.
My children have definitely learned the art of hospitality. They live in three different cities, but they remain close. They stay in touch and make sure they all stay part of each other’s lives. It is a blessing and a gift to see the joy they have in being together. That joy makes for a very sweet weekend.

yet our roots remain as one

It sounds like a lovely weekend, and I love how they revealed the baby’s gender. Cute and different–my husband would have bought into that idea for our youngest. What a lovely family. I’m glad you convinced your granddaughter to pose, even if that meant a bribe. Who wouldn’t want to pose. 😀

It was a wonderful weekend. And the reveal was so very fun!
My granddaughter has hit the phase where she definitely wants to make up her own mind. She is always very polite about it but very firm. It kind of makes me laugh because my middle son was the same way at that age.

Being assertive is a good skill when needed, being polite does soften the request. Smart girl.

What an incredible idea !
Great children and great days together.
Love filled days create pleasant memories, which you can remind yourself of, once they are gone.
Love your post and your children’s idea.

They are so fun loving. Who would have thought that grown men and women could think up of something so unique ?

Someone way more creative than me! I would probably have made cupcakes with blue filling.

It really was the perfect way to reveal our next grandson! Raising boys is always a noisy thing so starting out with the noise was perfect.

Congrats!!! I love my grand-daughters but boys are ‘my thing’ after having 4 sons and now 2 grandsons. Family…God knew what he was doing when he made us like we are.

Thank you! I totally understand about boys being “your thing”. Having raised 3 sons,i get that thought. I don’t know that i would have done well with the drama a bunch of girls would have brought. God really does know.

I have always said I will take my boys over any little girl. BUT…I do love my grand-girls and with #5 on the way guess it is a good thing.

Great story. One of my greatest regrets is that we have lived hundreds of miles from my parents for over twenty years and while we talk everyday, they really missed watching their granddaughters grow up and seeing them on a regular basis.

My grandkids are a little over 4 hours away and the new one will be about 3 hours away. I think it is too far!! But it could be a lot worse. It helps that the 4 hour ones have all their grandparents here so they come quite often. When I think how lucky I was to grow up with pretty much all my cousins within a 30 mile radius I realize I was really blessed as a kid. My boys had that same experience. I do regret my grandkids will not.

My sons have always loved target shooting. I think the added bonus of big noise and explosions was a huge highlight for them!

I loved reading about your Mother’s Day and the big day before. I laughed that you enjoyed a wiggly grandchild on your lap in church. I never did that, because it was much too dangerous! I had about five seconds to get from a chair to the organ bench after the sermon, so I had to pay close attention to know when to jump. Last Sunday I had an empty lap and a full heart.

I could stay sitting the entire service. I learned early when my sons were small that a dress did not always work out well in church. My skirt always ended up hitched up a little to high to be modest! Maybe that is why I still wear dress pants to church! I was glad Sunday that I had.

What a beautiful weekend you had, Happy Mother’s Day Faye! And congratulations on the wonderful news of your future grandson!! Yes my nephew and his wife have a baby due in July and they too did the reveal, however it kind of didn’t go off as it was supposed to so people weren’t sure, but they had a backup, they made a cake too and the inside was in the color of the gender, which in their case was pink! 🙂

Yes it is in September. The son and his wife having the new baby were married on my birthday three years ago! I thought it would be handy if the new grandson made his appearance that day also!!
