The Right Nesting Box

Screech Owl

My husband and I have been watching this nesting box the last while. We have watched the wood ducks pass it by in favor of an old tree with a hole in it. We have watched robins sit on top of it, but not go in. We have watched  flickers head on inside and check it out, only to fly right back out and not return.

Just the other day I thought I saw something in the opening. Whenever my husband looked there was nothing there. I think, he thought I was imagining things or hallucinating or something.

My husband looked over in that direction,  a few days ago, and ran for the binoculars. This time there was definitely a bird sitting in the opening! When we looked closer we discovered a screech owl sitting there, looking our way. My husband was really happy as he loves owls.

I quickly got my camera and tried to sneak in close to get a good picture of him or her (Who really knows?). It was kind of funny….the closer I got, I realized that the bird was watching me; watch him! When I got a little too close he hunkered down a little lower in the opening of the nesting box.

We were hoping the little owl would choose to use the box to raise a family. For two days, the screech owl used the box as a temporary home.  The third day he or she never showed up again. We were pretty disappointed to realize that the owl had not chosen to make the nesting box it’s final nesting choice for this season.

It does make me wonder what they do not like about that particular location. Isn’t it roomy enough? Is it too rustic? Do they want more than one bedroom? I guess I won’t ever know as they have never stopped to leave a note or tell me!

I wonder if we are like those birds? Are there places where God intends us to be but we just aren’t seeing the plan He has put before us? I have a feeling there are a lot of times my eyes are shut tightly to the place He has put before me.

What are our reasons? The place isn’t what we were searching for? We don’t think the time is right for that particular move? It could be any number of reasons or excuses to not make the step.

Or maybe, we are where He put us and we aren’t sure we really like this place. We find it hard to be content with the circumstances that make up our lives. I know I can fuss and fume when my plan seems to not be working according to the way I thought it should.

If I really stop and open my heart and eyes in those instances I realize I had made my plan and then asked God to bless it. And yes…..that is totally backwards!

Here’s to a new plan….ask God for His plan first! Who knows…..we just might find that the “nesting box” He places before us; is really a great fit. We might find that we really are content being where we are supposed to be, instead of always wishing to be somewhere else.

May you find contentment and have no qualms about enjoying the path you find yourself traveling. May you feel blessed to be wherever you are at his moment. May you be placed in the perfect “nesting box”….the one made just for you.

He is a wise man who does not grieve
for the things which he has not,
but rejoices for those which he has.

    Faye,
Love the analogy. We choose to run away from the nesting box or path God wants us to move on( like Jonah) but we need to be like Mary, trusting and innocent in our trust.
I hope the screech owl found a good “somewhere” to nest.

Look at that precious little owl! That is a prize worthy photo…remember…I love owls just like your husband loves owls! Don’t forget my Mr. Owl who now lives at the farm! I needed your post today as I am getting a bit concerned about moving to the farm in the not too far away future…even part-time at the farm! Silly me! If I stop and remember you and the wonderful life you have on your farm…I calm down! We were placed together for many reasons and this is one good reason…plus the owls and the junk stores!!!

Good timing. I’ve been seeking God’s “Updated” plan for my nesting box since my position was eliminated at the end of March and I found myself without a job for the first time since I was fourteen.
Luckily, He pointed me in the direction of building a rainy day fund, which we have been relying on. In the meantime, I wander through the woods looking for a nest.

How nice of this little owl to stop by and pay you a short visit. Nice capture in your photo. Yes, we all need to learn to be content in the nesting box (home) where we abide. God knows more about what we need in our lives than we do. A very nice post Faye – enjoyed reading every word.

Beautiful post, fabulous photo (I’m so envious of your owl) and a perfect analogy. God really does find our path for us, we just have to walk and continue to walk. He knows what is right for us. I will admit that there are time when I ask why? Why this? What has that happened? Why me? …. ohh the questions can sometimes get too complicated for my small brain to work out even … but the answer always comes back: Trust in Him. He knows the path I must travel for the reasons He knows I need. And I become thankful. For once I recognise the reasons, the path doesn’t seem quite such a difficult one. Maybe it’s that I’m no longer fighting again that path … perhaps. Possibly. Probably.

I ask the same questions! All the Whys….why mes???? I have an aunt who had medical issues and when I asked her how she was doing she replied, “Well, I am doing fine. Why shouldn’t it be me who has this stuff?” A totally different perspective on it. I always try remember that with “stuff”. Why not me?
So glad you are in my life also!

I wonder if it’s too long? Maybe since they can’t see out it if the nest is down below that makes them uncomfortable. That’s so cool though, so glad you got a picture, I love owls too. You are so right in what you say though, we should try to listen to God to hear what His plan for us is. He knows what’s best and if we just quiet ourselves we might hear what He has to say. I absolutely love that quote at the end!! 🙂 You know what you need to do is hang a wreath on your front door, last Spring I had a bird twice make a nest, hatch eggs and feed the babies til they flew away. It was awesome to watch but messy. I have a long oblong glass window in my front door so I was able to watch everything. Daddy fed Mama who then fed the babies. He would go get the food and then Mama chewed and gave it to the little ones. What a learning experience it was and magical. 🙂

The box is actually a wood duck box and a screech owl box. Along the front inside there is a mesh so they can get in and out….it mimics the inside of a hollow tree trunk.
Two years ago a wood duck raised her family in there. Last year flickers did …this year no one. Yet!
It is so much fun to watch birds and baby birds!

Oh well then you still have time, someone will show and stay, it’s just a matter of who decides on it! I’m really taken with birds this year!

I’ve notice that blue jays are awkward birds…and scaredy cats too! That’s an ironic statement. hehe
They’re the biggest of the birds that come to the feeder and the most skittish.

Too bad about the screech owl. That would have been pretty exciting!
I have a duck nesting in my bergenia plants, and a robin contemplating the spot on top of our electric meter again. Both locations are very inconvenient for us, but it is amazing how quickly birds set up shop and lay a few eggs. Then you are pretty much stuck with them for the duration.

My husband has been making sure to always shut the door to the machine shed. Any time he has it open even for an hour …. the barn swallows, robins, sparrows and starlings come flying in with their beaks full of nesting materials.
It is fun to watch them raise families!

Maybe they just see this box as a bird hotel, not as home… Everything’s included, but they don’t need to stay for a long time.
