Leaving The Nest

IMG_3372 Well Hidden.JPG

A few posts ago I shared a picture of very new baby robins in a nest that was in one of our white pine trees.  The trees grow at the edge of our backyard and always seem to attract birds. The other day I got curious about how much those babies had grown…… I was totally surprised!

Those babies had gotten so big; they were perched on the edge of the nest. I had no idea if there were still four of them or not as they were jam-packed in and on that nest. I did not dare get too close because I did not want to scare them into jumping out before they were ready to leave.

I was really grateful for my zoom lens with trying to get their picture. I did not have to get too close and disturb them to much.

I could see Mama Robin sitting on my garden fence with her beak full of a bug. She was not happy that I was checking her nest and she kept a sharp eye on me. I turned to take her picture but she was not having any of that and took off.

Today I went back to take another look and discovered that the babies were gone. I am hoping they took off on their own and did not become a meal for the local predators. The raccoons and stray cats in our area are notorious for hunting the baby birds.

I am hoping to see those young robins hopping about the place waiting for mom and dad to come feed them. It always seems like they leave the protection of that nest a little too early to be safe. It make me wonder if they just outgrow the nest or if something else prompts them to leave.

This is the time of year that many kids are graduating from grade schools, high schools, and colleges. I often wonder if they feel ready to move on or if they are “pushed” to get out of the nest and on to that next level.

I know as parents we try equip our kids to be prepared for when they join the “real world” I am never very sure just what we, as parents, think the real world is. Maybe we should wonder if they are amply prepared to join a different world than the one they are leaving.

Usually by the time our children are ready to move on, they have developed an independent streak that tends to drive parents crazy.  It is always good to remember that it is that same streak that will carry them into and through that next phase of their lives.

My mom always told me to enjoy those days as they would go too fast….and she was right! Those days are a blessing and something to be cherished. It is good to see our children grow and become independent. It is good to see them venture out and make their own homes.

It is also good to see them come back and strengthen those ties to the places and people that were part of their growing up years. It is good to have them come back to visit the nest……

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One of these is roots, the other, wings.

Roots appear strong and wings appear flimsy…yet, wings are the catalyst for flight…even for teenagers going away for the first time. I was sad and excited at the same time for Justin and Kathleen to go away to college. Of course, she was five years younger so we had time to adjust to leaving a child at college…and realizing that they are really on the way to real independence. I imagine that you will see your robins hopping around looking for food or maybe perched on a tree branch happily singing. Like your own children and our children… they need time to figure out things on their own before they are truly joyful to return!

Miss having my son around, but it is nice and quiet. Our baby Robin birds have hatched and I saw them flying around the other day and heard them chirping. It was so exciting to see that they had survived. Now our weather is very cold and I wonder how they are doing there above our porch light. Ah, but the porch light is on, so I am sure they are as snug as can be in there.

Lovely work with zoom lens. Mama bird sounded very protective of her brood. Or maybe she doesn’t like having her picture taken. Or maybe she had a bad feather day 🙂 Those birds must have eaten a lot and so are growing up very fast. Very cute and like you, I do hope they find their way in the world and soar to great heights and places.

My parents also told me to enjoy my younger years. I did, but I am finding I am enjoying my life currently as it is right now. Love it a lot. But there is always nothing like taking a trip down memory lane and feel once again and experience all over again what you did as a carefree child 🙂

LOL on the bad feather day!! I did see two of them in the backyard this morning so I know two of them are safe so far!
I also really enjoy life at this phase. I love when the kids and grandkids come home but it is also enjoyable with just my husband and me.

Good to know the little birdies are safe. They are probably eager to stretch their wings and see the sights 🙂 Enjoy life. It is the simple things that give us the greatest satisfaction 🙂

What an incredible post. Absolutely great read, and I love the photos.
We too have Robins nesting about 15 feet outside my craftroom window, and as much as I love them dearly, cor, Mom makes such a fuss about returning to the nest with food for her babies. She makes a singy songy noise, over and over and over and … etc.

At first I found it so beautiful, but after afew hours, it becomes less joyful and simply a ‘noise’ which invades my brain. Aaargh! lol

Y’know, I think your posts could be turned into the most wonderful ‘fire-side’ book. Filled with inspiration and love.
You should take a look into it Chicken. I honestly think it would sell.
Thank you for a brilliant post and the lovely photos.

Roots and wings — what a summary! I’ve seen lots of birds come for a drink of water on my deck, but I haven’t seen any nests or babies. We thought a pair of song sparrows had a nest in a vine just off our porch, but we couldn’t see it. My children flew the nest years ago. Your post made me remember those days with fondness.

Nice post Faye – it is always nice to watch baby birds grow up and leave the nest. Our children do leave the nest (home), entirely too soon our their parents.

Thank you so much Peggy. The time does seem to go by awful fast when our kids are growing up. One day you have babies…..and it seems like a few years later and your babies are having babies! My husband always says it happens just one day at a time…..I think he is right.

Lol! I can only do them on my phone – I did see the heart thing (I can’t do that either..) and I can only do brackets and colons on the laptop. My new phone has fab emojis…lol..my favourites are 😺 🐺 💕 and 💎 while the most obscure ones I’ve found are 🍱 and 🎩…just waiting for an opportunity to use them! 😺💕x
