The Wonder of Birds

Baby Kestrel

This morning brought a rare treat for me. For some reason, unknown even to me, I really like kestrels. I have no idea why I find these little hawks fascinating but I do.

My husband was outside for a bit, this morning, and suddenly came back to the house. He told me to follow him and bring my camera. He would not tell me why, he only assured me that I would not be sorry.

I found my shoes, grabbed my camera, and headed out the door after him. After being married to this man for nearly 37 years I have learned to trust him when he tells me to follow.

We went down to what used to be the hog house/lambing shed. Once we got there my husband looked really disappointed. He showed me a cinder block that a baby kestrel had been perched on just a few minutes before.

We stood there a bit and started to look around to see if the little bird had hopped somewhere else. (We weren’t sure if he even knew how to fly.) We found the little kestrel hiding under a roll of woven wire that stood next to the building.

I moved in to take a few pictures, which did not make the little kestrel happy at all!  It was pretty sunny and that also made it hard to get a good photo.

We disturbed him enough that he did fly to another outbuilding, which answered the question of his flying ability.  We stood and watched a bit, and heard him calling to his parents who were flying overhead.

I went back to work in the house and it didn’t take long before my husband came to the door again with the same request…..follow him and bring the camera. This time he had spotted a pair of Baltimore Orioles bringing food to their babies in the nest.

Baltimore Orioles

It is always amazing to me how they build those sac-like nests. It is also amazing to me that those baby birds don’t get motion sickness when those branches are swinging during the windstorms that we have.

Those nests are so hard to see when the leaves are full on the trees. My husband said the only way he spotted it was by watching to see where mom and dad Oriole landed each time. (If you look closely the nest is the brownish blob beneath the male Oriole.) You could also plainly hear the baby birds begging for food every time a parent landed with lunch.

It was an amazing way to break up the chores of the morning. To stand in the sun and watch the birds. It really was a treat to be so close to a small kestrel. I loved knowing that the kestrel pair had successfully hatched and raised at least this one baby.

I am so blessed to be married to a man who loves the outdoors and loves to share it with me. I have seen so many beautiful things because of him. It is a wonderful thing to be able to stand with him and just watch the birds…..and the next time he comes to the door and tells me to bring the camera and follow him….I will!

I am not familiar with Kestrels at all! Where have I been? Now I have two things to learn about tonight…a Kestrel and Sylvan Lake! You are indeed blessed to have married a man who will come to the house and have something to show you!! Mike does that too! Usually he wants to show me a flower or a blooming tree!

Very, very good! Yes…we are blessed. Our thankfulness should be immense. Mike does think that I talk a lot and I stay up really too late…but, I am simply keeping him informed by talking and learning about new things to inform him about the next day when I stay up late!! I doubt that made sense! Oh well!

Oh this one of the things I really miss. Sharing nature on a daily lookout. There are barn swallows nesting on my sons porch and they dart back and forth trying to tell the grands that this is now our space. The nest was pretty full last time I was over there and today I’ll see if they have flown I’m sure they have.

We have barn swallows also….the barn and corn crib are full of them and I love watching them raise those babies. I also found a wren has a next with babies in a tiny cranny in the outside corner of my chicken coop…That was really fun to find out.

There is always something fascinating about raptors. You got some great shots of this juvenile.

We have a daily show of waterfowl around our house. We have a lake in the back and just one block in the other direction is the Chesapeake Bay. Either here or over there we get to see osprey, pelicans, terns, white herons, great blue herons, mallards, wood ducks, Canada geese, mergansers and cormorants to name a few. Also the garden variety of yard birds that visit our feeder. Yesterday my wife said she heard some chirping down by the waterline in the back so I think we shall see a brood of some kind of duck soon.

You are so lucky!! A lake. We do have a very small river running through our ground so we get to see Eagles, duck of all kinds, Canadians. I also think there is a resident pair of great blue herons as they fly over every night.

Oh, this is a lovely post Faye. My husband often comes in and tells me to get my camera and follow him and I do. Sounds like we have great husbands. My husband and I both love nature so much. Loved your Van Gogh quote. I have never seen a Kestrel here, but have seen Orioles in our area. Birds are entertaining creatures.

Well … I don’t know what happened to the comment I made yesterday, but it’s obviously being enjoyed by some aliens, up there in the great wide wonderment of the universe.

So … I’ll try to comment again and hope this one gets to you.

I enjoyed this post Ma’am it was really interesting for me. Where I live I don’t see much of birds in the day time except at night when they come back to their nest. Trust is an essential commodity in every relationship. Thank you for sharing your joyful moments and happiness with us. It’s quite contagious.

Everywhere you look you can see the wonderful colors and creations of God but one needs to look.
It is so easy to get caught up in life, the hot weather, indoors, and not see the beautiful things around us.
Thank you for the reminders and the lovely bird pictures. I didnt know there were birds called kestrels.

The oriole is our state bird, and my husband and I were just saying we have never seen one! I have tried several times to attract them with orange slices but to no avail. Thank you for sharing, the pictures were wonderful of both birds!

It always bring me good feels whenever I read your post about farm life; birds, flowers, trees and the like. It’s very refreshing.

And I so love the very few words you share about your husband:

I found my shoes, grabbed my camera, and headed out the door after him. After being married to this man for nearly 37 years I have learned to trust him when he tells me to follow.

I believe you also have ups and downs. But it is very inspiring to read about lovely marriages that last this long. 🙂

God Bless you more and thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much Jen! I am glad it “fills” a place inside you. Yes we have our ups and downs. Through the years we have learned how to deal with stuff. I would love to write posts about him but he prefers I don’t ….so I need to respect and honor that. I really believe marriage goes through seasons and some of the seasons are pretty hard and some are wonderful. Early on we decided if we were angry with each other, it was okay to take a walk down the road alone…..as long as we turned around and walked right back.

Awww…. thank you for always taking time to reply to my comments. I truly hope and pray to get to that day when I will have so much peace and happiness in my relationship. That the bumps, the ups and downs would be so easy to handle it wouldnt feel like it’s so much work. I pray that one day the struggle would be less and we would be as calm, as light, as relaxed as we should be.

I truly admire old couples like you. I mean, who doesnt want to grow old with someone u love & loves u back?

        Dont we all?
