Celebrations and Community

IMG_3928 Golden Anniversary Cake

Last week was a week that was extremely busy with a variety of things to do. My husband and I walked beans, I washed a lot (did I say a lot?) of old pop bottles, we brewed a batch of homemade root beer and I had to make 7 sheet cakes for an anniversary.

The sheet cakes take time and by the end of the day I am tired…but they are kind of fun to make.  There is a lot of satisfaction in seeing them all lined up when they have been baked, frosted and decorated.

These cakes were for a couple in our church who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They had decided to celebrate by serving cake to the congregation after the morning service. The last couple years, people in our church are starting to do more of this rather than the traditional open house.

I think it is a really neat idea when someone decides to celebrate their major life events by sharing that special time with the church community. In our area that always includes food of some type. I am not sure if it is a Dutch heritage type of thing or just something we do in the Midwest.

Sharing with the church family creates such an atmosphere of community and fellowship. It is a blessing to watch people in our church basement, eating cake, drinking coffee and juice, and visiting together. The laughter and hugs of people reconnecting is something to see and even better to be a part of.

Watching Psalm 133:1 (How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!) play out before your eyes is truly a wondrous thing. People talking and children running around their parents and grandparents is a beautiful sight.

I think that often we don’t realize how much a smile or hug can impact someone else.  We don’t always see that there are lots of lonely people in the middle of a crowd. It is good to draw others in and encourage them…it is good to make sure everyone feels like they have a part to play in community. Relationships can be messy….but so rewarding.

I have a friend, Jackie, who once told us, “Be the pebble.” I would encourage you to all be the pebble. Toss yourself into the pond of someone’s life. Create some ripples in the lives of those around you. When you do…..watch for the blessing.

but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Your cake look better then mine. Yesterday was my mother’s 94th birthday. I made a chocolate cake that I have made dozens of times before and it was all of two inches high.
Tasted good but sure wasn’t very festive. No party…my sister took Mother and I to the Dancing Rabbit for lunch. How is the root beer turning out.?

We had a root beer float last night and it was excellent! We moved it to our basement today so it will chill and quite the brewing process and maintain it’s fizz.
I have had cakes turn out 2 inches tall! My husband seems to think they taste the best as they are very condensed and moist!

That one sheet cake is gorgeous. But SEVEN of them?????? You are one big cake-blessing to your church! I once had a subscription to a cake decorating magazine. I don’t think I ever made anything that looked as good as their photos, but it was fun to see possibilities. I’m still floored over your making seven cakes. Wow!

    Faye,
What a work of art that cake is and surely more tasty than any story bought cake.
Do you all speak Dutch when you get together ?
I am sure your church family enjoyed your cakes and particularly that one happy couple. We are reaching 25 years of marriage here.

Thank you so much Susie! I wish I knew how to speak Dutch. My great grandparents came to the USA from the Netherlands waaaay back when. I think my folks understand Dutch but they don’t really speak it. It is too bad that got lost through the generations.
My husband and I are going on 37 years this fall! I find that hard to believe. We don’t feel old enough to have been married that long.

    Hello Chicken. ❤
    What a truly beautiful post.
I love that you made these cakes for the Wedding Anniversary couple, and boy what beautiful cakes they are! You do indeed have a talent!

I know how tired you must have been once all the cakes were finished, but such a blessing to your heart that you'd done them and they all looked so beautiful.

But … my most favourite part of this wonderful post was this quote by Mother Teresa:

“I alone cannot change the world,
but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

    ― Mother Teresa

I try my hardest to live the days of my life following her wise words and when someone says how nice I am (or words of that sort) I (kind of) don’t understand why I’m seen as ‘nice’ or out of the norm. For …. I’m nothing special … I’m just a pebble.

Love this post Chicken, and you. I recognised you, a long time ago, as a fellow pebble, and it’s what made me want to sit with you, in the same big pool.

So so glad to be a pebble with you Cobs! I feel the ripples from you way over here in Midwest USA….and I am blessed that I do.
I have a feeling others see stuff in us that we really don’t and that is probably a good thing.
I also have a feeling your pebble is one of those shiny ones that reflect….cause you reflect God to me and all those around you. I thank you for that!

Ohhh Chicken . . . you made me cry. That’s probably the very nicest thing anyone has ever said to me and it touched the very core of me and made me cry.
They were tears which began in my heart, and made their way out into the world through my eyes. Love you, my pebble friend.

You too are a reflective pebble for I see and feel God in your every word, and love ‘being in your company’ – as far as the intenet allows. But you know what I mean.
        Love you oodles Chicken.

Lovely post – I like that tradition of sharing a special life event with the church, it shows a real sense of community which I sometimes feel is sadly lacking nowadays. Great cake too! 🍰🍰🍰🍰
