More Than Fishing

IMG_3977 Fishing the Little Rock

Little Rock River

The weather was really nice a couple days ago so my husband and I decided we should try fishing on our bit of the river that night.  There is a sandbar that is a great place to sit and fish…..or contemplate life.

To get to the sandbar; we had to slither our way down the bank through head high weeds, saplings, and fallen tree branches. It was kind of a trick getting down there while holding a fishing pole, bucket (to sit on), and having my camera slung around my shoulders.

We did make it, and it was great once we were down there. It was quiet, except for the birds singing, a beaver crawling around behind a tree on the opposite bank and the sound of water rippling over rocks….a perfect evening to sit with a line in the water.

We were kind of worried that we would get eaten alive by mosquitoes, so we each took our choice of spray. I whipped up an essential oils spray that I wanted to try. I will share the recipe because I really like it and it worked for me.

Spray
10 drops Geranium EO
15 drops Lavender EO
5 drops Patchouli EO
10 drops Lemongrass EO
10 drops Citronella EO
2 oz. Witch Hazel
2 oz. water
Put Witch Hazel in 4 ounce spray bottle
Add EO’s (Essential Oils)
Add water

I found it worked wonderfully for me. I have yet to convince my husband it would work so he continues to use his chemical-laden spray. Someday I will convince him!

Anyway…..back to fishing…….

We stayed out there for a couple hours. I regret to report that all I caught was a corn stalk, two sticks and a bush on the bank. I am so glad I don’t have to survive off my catch!  My husband did have a few nibbles but nothing that really grabbed the bait and latched on.

I have a feeling it might be due to the really low water levels in the river. The water is so shallow you could see to the bottom most places. We were hoping that would enable us to see the fish swimming along….no go on that one.

I did find some pretty weeds flowers along the bank. They were such a beautiful shade of purple that I could not resist taking a picture of them. I must admit, I find it hard not to take pictures of most flowers.

I have no idea what kind of plant that is but the blooms were really delicate and so pretty.

There is something so peaceful about sitting by the river’s edge. It might be the way the wind blows through the tree tops and sets the leaves to rustling. It might be the birds twittering in the trees and settling in for the night. Maybe it is the fact you can watch a young beaver swim silently along the bank, leaving a wake in the water behind him. It might be the sound of the water rippling over the rocks and sparkling in the last of the evening light.

I do know that it is a great place to be. It is a great place to reflect and slow down the pace of life. As we came up the bank and out of the trees we were greeted with a beautiful sunset. It was the most perfect way to cap off the day.

This weekend may you find a place, hidden away from the world, that you can stop, reflect and slow down just a bit and feel the blessing.

“Many men go fishing all their lives
without knowing
it’s not the fish they are after.”

Sounds like a beautiful time. Thank you for sharing the bug spray recipe, mine worked finally when I added extra cedarwood and lavender, but I forgot where I found original recipe, so now I’ll use yours!

    Faye,
I laughed when I read you caught one corn stalk, two sticks and a bush on the bank. It might seem irreverent but I suddenly thought of if our Lord was fishing and he put out his line, who he would catch- one fish hanging on a rock, one fish among thorns, one fish that fell among the path and maybe just one good fish swimming in the water ?
I loved your photos- the ones of the still river and the purple flower stood out.
Thanks for sharing your quiet time with us.

You are so welcome Susie! I love your thoughts on what the Lord would catch…I don’t think it is irreverent at all. There is a lot of truth to your thoughts. At least I know I would probably be one of those hanging on a rock or in the thorns! And now He has put me in His river of life!

Thank you for the mosquito repellent recipe. I needed this during our recent GA-Fl vacation. We are not use to that as we really don’t have a problem where we are in AZ. My poor son had three bites one night! We hadn’t even ventured out, just walked to the car. Last night, we had dinner with our friends on the back porch with no mosquitoes…lol. I’ll have to keep your recipe. I’m sure to need in the future…thank you!

I actually like to help people get signed up so they are their own member of Young Living. That way you can take advantage of the 24% wholesale price and order when you feel like it. I guess I chose this company because of their Seed To Seal program. They own or contract with their farms to they have control over the entire process from seed in the ground to oil in the bottle. That way they know exactly what is in each bottle and as a member I can go to any of the farms at any time to watch or help! Someday I am hoping to get to the Lavender fields in Utah.
If this is something that would interest you….my essential oils page tells how you can do that! If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask. I may not have the answer but I know people who do.

A truly beautiful peep into your day and it’s left me so peace filled and ready for my bed.
I loved the catches and admit to smiling, and laughing a little – internally.

The flower … it looks like it’s related somehow to Sweat Peas. The delicate flower and the way the colour has that ‘dripped in’ colour to it. Maybe a Sweet Pea? Maybe? I have no idea. You have different things growing there so I’m scrambling about in the dark. lol.

Than you so much Chicken for bringing your day to me. I’ve enjoyed every word.
Sending much love ~ Cobs. x

It is fine….the smiling and laughing…I did out loud as we sat there and I kept catching everything but fish.
I do have a weed book for the great plains…I should probably be looking through it and seeing if I can find that flower/weed.
Glad you had a good visit over here.

A lovely post Faye. A quiet few hours on the bank of a river sounds wonderful. I have not done that for a long time. I am for your natural bug spray and no chemicals.

I love your beautiful fishing scene…peaceful…restful. We fish quite often on the Delaware Bay. A few weeks ago while we were there we had the biggest bite of our lives. A fish story that would’ve been in our repertoire forever. Unfortunately, the rod was in a pole holder while we ate lunch, and just at that moment the biggest bite ever pulled my husband’s rod out of the holder and away into the bay. Sigh…the one that got away…we’ll never know what it was. (And the gigantic greenhead flies are terrible biters…Avon Skin so Soft is my favorite repellent.)
