A Day at a Time

Birthday Box

I woke up yesterday to the fact that I had reached a milestone day…..I hit the big six zero on the birthday scale. I rolled over and asked my husband how in the world that had happened.  His dry response….”One day at a time”.

He hit that exactly right. Every day just brings us that much closer to the next milestone birthday. I don’t really have a problem hitting those milestones…I just have a problem realizing that I have hit them. I have often told my children that my plan is to get old but just not grow up…..they assure me I am doing fine on that goal.

My sister-in-law sent me a box of goodies from Missouri. Her card made me laugh as it featured two older ladies. I love the fact those ladies are laughing there heads off and enjoying life. The box contained chocolate, teas and candles with the letters spelling Older & Wiser. I am sure I am older I am just not sure on the wiser part!

My sister-in-law and I, have long called each other Milly and Tilly. Years ago we each knew women in their 90’s who were such an inspiration to us. The woman she knew was named Milly and the woman I knew was Tilly. We decided that when we “grew up” we wanted to be just like them.

Those women were fearless in their old age. They learned how to use computers, took the stairs instead of elevators and lived life. They just never gave up enjoying day to day life and kept moving as long as they could.

I am not sure if I spent my birthday in “Tilly fashion” or not. I don’t know that I really got a whole lot done. It was spent in a wonderful way. The day started with going to Coffee Break Bible study in a town nearby. This is my first experience with Coffee Break and I can tell I am going to love it.

After Bible study I ran errands in town and then headed on to the next town to meet a friend. Our plan had been to dig out some perennials that she wanted thinned out. We never made it out of the Fruited Plain where we met for lunch…… we were too focused on visiting and catching up. (I would highly recommend the Fruited Plain and their flatbread….mmmmmm).

I should back up and mention that she met me at the door with a birthday cupcake! It was beautiful. I tried to get a photo of it through its cellophane container.

Birthday Cupcake

It was beautiful until it fell sideways and smashed the flowers!  Fortunately smashed flowers did not affect the wonderful taste!

It was not exactly a day of pampering but it was pretty close to it. Any day spent with friends in Bible study and/or lunch is pampering in my book. I did not feel the least bit guilty that canning did not get done, grass did not get mowed and the house did not get cleaned. I knew all those things would not disappear and would be waiting for me today.

I came to the conclusion that it was the perfect way to spend a birthday. Bible study was a great way to start it off, lunch with a friend, sharing chocolates out of my birthday box with my husband and a bowl of ice cream with peaches to cap it off.

Life can be a little like my cupcake. We start out fresh and looking pretty good. After a time we get a little smushed up from events and don’t look quite like we started out. The good news is……no matter how smashed our frosting is…..we are still a cupcake and we are still good!

If the weekend finds you feeling a little mashed by life…..may you realize you are still okay……..even if your frosting has taken a different form. Blessings to you all this coming weekend!

And so encourage one another and help one another,
just as you are now doing.
(1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Susie, I am not anywhere near the same cupcake I used to be either! I know I am a “fluffier” cupcake than before, but that could be worse too. Life kind of mashed us up a bit and we might look a little battered but we are still….oh…so…good in God’s eyes.

Happy Birthday, Faye, or should I say, Tilly. Remember, age is just a number. According to most actuarial tables, I should be dead. I’m actually doing quite a bit better than that.

That cupcake looked so good I believe I would have eaten the wrapper just to get to it.

Glad you are still around Al! My dad is going to be 85 and always tells us that age is just a matter of mind over matter…if you don’t mind….it don’t matter. It think he is right.
The cupcake was fantastic….I even licked the frosting off the container where is got mashed…and it was worth it!

Happy Birthday Faye! Just turned 60 myself with a surprise part from my husband. The invitation said we were celebrating the 30th anniversary of my 30th birthday. He knew I didn’t want to turn 60. I think the way you spent your day was perfect. Yes, I would agree with others, the cupcake looks delicious and your analogy of the cupcake toppling over does fit how life is. Enjoy your Bible Study. I just joined one myself and we are studying the book of Nehemiah.

60 isn’t really so bad! I just cannot believe I have children in their 30’s! That floors me.
We are studying the Fruit of the Spirit in our Bible Study. I think it is going to be a really good one. Nehemiah would be so interesting also!

Thank you for the birthday wishes. And I am so glad to see you back! I have been missing you.
I saw some really cool huge metal chickens on our vacation to the Black HIlls a few weeks back! If I had a great place for one and the finances I would be very tempted to have one! It is probably fortunate that I can’t really afford one lol.

Happy 60th Birthday Faye!! What a beautiful cupcake…good thing it fell over and smashed otherwise you would have not wanted to ruin it’s beauty!! Sounds like you had the perfect day…spending it just the way you wanted…that’s perfect!! My birthday was the 28th…I hit the big 60 next year. I’m not worried about it either…and we do get wiser…you definitely are a wise woman!! Wishing you a year of magic, love, dreams come true and all that’s is good!! xo

Happy Late, Late Birthday! I knew that your birthday was coming up and I still missed your post. What a faithful friend I have become lately…so sorry! But…I did remember that you were a September baby just like Mike and I!! The birthday cupcake looks delicious and I LOVE the card and the Birthday Box! Milly and Tilly made me think about two of my Aunt Eva’s friends…Pansy and Bill ( a lady named Bill). They laughed loudly and talked all of the time and acted like they never got along! However, they went everywhere together! I thought that they were hysterical and hoped that I would always be so silly and fun-loving!

Sixty is a fine age to be! On my 60th birthday, I had a birthday dinner at a Mexican restaurant for myself…one of my friends had been in a community theater production that afternoon and just quickly put on some jeans and a shirt to make it to the party on time. She forgot and left on the corset that she was wearing with the theater costume. Those corsets really work because her jeans fell off when she stood up at the table…we all made a huge scene because we were laughing so loudly. I could not seem to calm down at all! Her biggest worry…she was meeting my nephew and his wife for the first time that night…I cannot have another birthday party for a while! The lesson learned…buy a corset and everything will fit great! And carry a very large safety pin!!!

Happy birthday Ma’am and I apologize for it coming late. You are older and wiser and your sister in law isn’t wrong. According to Sarah Ban Breathnach – Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path to joy. And you my dear Ma’am is living in the moment. Happy belated birthday Ma’am and never grow old.
