I thought I would try something different today…..a photo challenge with black and white photos. To be honest I have no idea if I am doing this correctly or not. I really have no idea what I am doing…this isn’t the first time in my life I have felt this way and I am fairly sure it will not be the last!!
The topic: All Things Farm Related was perfect for me. I dug around in my old photos, looking for ones that I have not posted on the blog yet. I then tried my hand at changing them to black and whites. Hopefully I meet the criteria for the challenge! Some of them still seem to have a slight colored hue to them …… so who knows…..
The first picture is home to my girls…the chicken coop. It only seemed fitting to post that one as I am the Chicken Grandma to a lot of you and to my grand-kids…and you know I am a pushover for those grand-kids.
Barns, for me, are the heart of a farmyard. I love seeing the old barn….but then, I love old wooden barns. I believe that there is something magical about those structures with their big haymows full of fragrant hay, grass and straw bales. Seeing it standing next to the new metal shed makes her seem like the matriarch of the farmyard.
Spring field work is such an act of faith on our small farm. My husband purchases those spendy bags of seed in the winter, prepares the ground, plants those seeds and then prays for rain. Sometimes the rains come in a timely manner and sometimes they don’t.
Sometimes living is plentiful and sometimes a little tight…but we have never gone to bed hungry and never had to walk out the door naked for lack of clothing…(and the world can be grateful for that!!) We are indeed blessed.
In the corner of my backyard is the old summer kitchen. It used to be in the middle of our farmyard and was kind of in the way so we relocated it. It has now been re-purposed as my garden shed. It is filled with clay flowerpots, gardening tools, chicken equipment and odds and ends.
It needs repair and I have lots of plans for this little shed. It will take my husband to do most of it so I am learning to be patient….I am not always so good at that! At this point in time, pigeons have been raising their young in it. I am quite sure they are very grateful that we are not too speedy.
I thought I would finish with a photo of our view towards the river in the wintertime.
Life slows down on the farm in the winter….If you don’t have lots of livestock to tend. It is a wonderful time to huddle next to the woodstove with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. It is also a wonderful time for dreaming of the coming planting season.
In it’s own way it is a season of hope. Hope for the coming Spring …hope for another good year…hope, just because hope is what farming is all about.
“There are only two reasons to farm:
because you have to, and because you love to.
The ones who choose to farm
choose for love.”
― Wendell Berry
The land yields its harvest;
God, our God, blesses us.

I love your shed/summer kitchen. It seems to have so much character. I’m guessing you never cooked in it.

Never have cooked in it yet…..I do have a small set of cupboards and apartment sized gas stove waiting to be installed in the shed.

Faye,
Your summer kitchen looks like a kitchen we might have had on our farms way back in time. People preferred to have the kitchen outside the house for some reason.
I loved your B& W photos and especially the view of the river.
Farming does teach you patience, whether it is waiting for your husband to do something which matters so much to you or looking out for new plants from the seeds you put in the soil.
It is difficult for us to wait for God to do things in our lives. We pray and we hope we get an immediate answer but being a planter gives us that perspective to wait and watch.
Thanks for the post, Faye,
Susie

Susie, That is exactly what summer kitchens used to be used for around here also. They were probably mainly used in the summer before air conditioning. The women wanted to keep the heat out of the house on those hot humid days and so used a summer kitchen. When we moved here we could see it had turned from summer kitchen to tool shed.
Farming is a wonderful teacher of patience.

I love love love photo challenges, too. I usually do them on Instagram because (for me) they are easier to follow with the hashtags and daily prompts. Have you heard of #FMSPAD? That is one of my favorite ones actually and you could probably do it on blogs, too!

I have not heard of that! I do Instagram but I am not totally sure how all the hashtag thing actually works lol. I am learning….but slowly!

All hashtags are are ways to categorize your photos. People use them for silly reasons and I don’t get it. In IG if you follow #fmspad or today’s prompt angle: #fmspad_angle you’ll see the posts and probably mine too! Hehe and if you do it you’d tag your pics w those tags too. Does that make sense?

You’re so funny, I love the way you start, not knowing what you are doing and that isn’t the first nor the last time you’ll feel this way…hehe! Oh yes you must have the girls’ home first and I agree the wooden barn does stand as the Matriarch of the farm…I love big wooden barns too and my favorite style of home is a farmhouse. I love the wrap around porches and just the overall welcoming look. Yes I bet there’s lots of hope and faith put into planting the seeds and waiting for its harvest. I love how you say the pigeons are grateful that you are slow about the summer kitchen…I bet they are too!! That snow pic made me shiver and think of what’s to come in the not too distant future…but that can wait for now!! Wonderful read Faye…I think you did an outstanding job, especially for not knowing what you are doing…you’re pretty great at that!! 🙂

It is just fun to give something a try. If it turns out …..wonderful. If not….still wonderful because it might encourage someone else of they know it doesn’t have to be perfect.

You’re exactly right!! However it turns out is how it’s supposed to turn out. I’m sure it encourages others to give it a try too…no perfection is boring…and too demanding…trust me I know!! 😉
