Packing up the Tree

20180118_101442.jpg

We finally did it….we finally took down the Christmas tree and packed up the ornaments. Yes….I know that Christmas was what…….three weeks ago? The only excuse I have is that this is how we roll over at our place.

It has always been this way in our home. We have never gotten the tree and all it’s ornaments up the day after Thanksgiving. It has always been a week or so later. I am not sure why….it is just the way it is around here.

Due to the fact we get our Christmas decorations up later than most people; I am thinking it is only fair we also take them down later than most people. Our festive decorations probably stay up the same length of time as other peoples’…..we just start later and finish later.

I only recall one year when the tree came down before New Year’s Eve. The reason for that was because we were entertaining and hosting a party at our home that year and the tree just took up way to much room in the living room.

For some reason it seems to take way less time to take those decorations down and pack them away than it does to put them all up. Makes me wonder if I spend too much time with ornament placement on my tree? Or, maybe it could be the fact you really don’t have to check the lights when taking them OFF the tree?

My frontroom does look a lot larger now than it did yesterday when the tree was taking up an entire corner….the downside is…it doesn’t look as festive and warm either! I have heard of people leaving their tree up and decorating it for other holidays, like Valentines or Easter.  I am not quite ready to do that as I really want my couch back in the room.

I kind of think my husband and I have a tough time letting go of the Christmas tree because Christmas is such a great time of family gatherings. For us it is the time our kids come home and we get to spend some time with them and the grandkids.

During the Christmas season we see friends and family that aren’t around other times of the year. We play games, open gifts, eat lots of great food and we get to celebrate that our Savior was born.

Maybe it kind of feels like when we pack up the tree, we pack up all those good things. Instead of looking at it that way, maybe I need to be looking at it from another angle. I think I need to be remembering that it isn’t the tree or the decorations that made the season so special…..it is the people we shared it with and the reason for that sharing.

Perhaps that is why New Years follows so closely….so we realize we get to have another year of joy…another year of sharing…another year of celebrating what makes life worth living. May you be blessed in the sharing, the celebrating and the living!

Some Christmas tree ornaments
do more than glitter and glow,
they represent a gift of love given a long time ago.

I love this so much! Makes me (almost) wish we were still in the holiday season! I love Christmas time for those same reasons, the people, the family gatherings, the food, the fun. And haha, yes, it’s only fair you keep your decorations up a bit longer 🙂

oh I miss Christmas! It leaves with all the gatherings and sweet surprises-now memories. I don’t suppose we could keep up all the details and plans . . .and work that Christmas brings, through out the year-but I feel like a beloved friend left. I do not like the work of taking down the decorations, either. I know in some way you are glad that is over. The verse was perfect as always. Here’s to a beautiful year ahead . . for you and me and the whole world. love Michele

Ours is down and outside. It’s an artificial tree and it will be the last year for that one. It’s just too much work getting it out of the attic and putting it away again. Next year we’ll opt for a table sized one. Things get harder to give up as we age, but it’s time for us to do so.

It’s obviously just us here in the UK who have the taking Christmas things down before or on 12th Night. Most people in the UK knows that it’s ‘very bad luck if Christmas Decorations are not taken down and packed away by the 12th Night of Christmas’

Now not everyone agrees as to exactly when twelfth night is. 12 days from 25 December (including Christmas day as day 1) arrives on the 5 January.

According to the Church of England, Twelfth Night is 5 January, and the day of Epiphany – when the three wise men came – is the 6th January.

But there are a few others who are sure that twelfth night is the 6th of January – as they begin their own count of 12 days, the day after Christmas Day.

The Google Calendar states that the Epiphany is on 6th January, but doesn’t indicate when the “Twelfth Night” is.

We, here in Cobweb Towers – and everyone else I know, takes down their Christmas Decorations before or on the 5th January.

I do agree though that although the living room suddenly looks bigger and tidier … it does look kind of stark and as if someone has removed a little bit of love light from the room. That feeling doesn’t last long … normally only until Little Cobs comes to play and from that moment the sparkle returns. 😀 But I do miss the tree. And for some strange reason, more so this year. The tree looked extra lovely this year, and I have no idea why. It just did.

Sending love and squidges ~ Cobs. xxx

I was reading about the 12th night this past week. I have never heard of it before!
My living room is still not quite to normal as I have not moved the couch back in yet. Right now I have put my sewing machine in that corner as it is the warmest room in the house.
For some reason my oldest son sent me home with a stuffed dinosaur he had purchased and requested an enlarged version. Being the mom….I said sure! I am finding it was not a wise choice as I had to make a pattern and every time I think I will get it done….I discover I need to go get more of this or that to finish it! I sense a blog post on this thing when I do finally get that thing done!

Lol do you suffer from Ornament Placement Syndrome….I say put your tree up when it pleases you and take it down when it pleases you!! I think you’re right that the tree conjures up all those wonderful treasured memories, but that’s ok. Your pic of the ornaments is soo pretty. I think putting the tree away rather than keeping it up all year helps to make the occasion special when you do put it up. I would be afraid that by having it up all year the wonderness and magic it stirs inside might be lost if you were to see it day after day. Maybe not. It is always nice to get your living room back too… 😉

Oh wow…how special is that…isn’t it so fun when you put the ornaments on that you remember what each one represents or when/where you got them!! It’s such a special time, putting up a tree. Yes taking it down is definitely faster.

Many Catholics leave their trees up until we celebrate Epiphany! Then, there are some who leave it up until “Candlemas.” Not quite sure what Candlemas is – I just know it’s February 2nd this year. So, that’s what I’m shooting for! 😳😂

Loved this post, and had to chuckle while reading it – knowing I should not spend time reading, and should focus on the tree coming down. But, it is just so beautiful!

I would have left it up longer but we were going to have warmer weather. We store all the tubs in our unheated garage…so warm weather is better for packing away than sub zero. That is the main reason it isn’t up any longer. I do miss the twinkling lights.

I love this post! Thanks for sharing your Christmas traditions with us. Also love the idea of the barn wreath! Great recycling of an older faux tree! I had to spray my old “white” tree gold since it has turned yellow. Arizona heat is hard on fake trees. 🌵

I got the decorations all put away about a week ago, but the tree will stay up until we return from our ‘snowbird’ stay in AZ. By then (end of April) there is always the option to just leave the tree up until it is time to redecorate it!

Hi, Faye. I had lost contact with you but I saw you at “beorganizedwithPamela” today so I looked to see what had happened. I find I am still marked as following but I had not opened my manage folder to receive your e-mails. I fixed that so I hope to see you again. I found a lot of folders like that. Live and learn. I thought it just happened automatically. 😀

One more thing. My Christmas stuff is finally down and in tubs still sitting in the kitchen waiting for my husband to carry them out. I don’t get in too much hurry. But then I don’t get them put up very soon either. 😀
