Weathering the Storm

Yesterday was the first time in a long time that my girls have not been let outside. The weatherman had been warning us of a coming blizzard that was set to start during the night on Sunday.

They couldn’t quite nail down how much snow they thought we would get, but they were very sure that what we got; would be blown around by very gusty winds. They were definitely right on the gusty winds.

To be honest…I still have no idea how much snow we actually had. It is kind of hard to tell when it is coming down horizontally and doesn’t seem to land anywhere. The horizon had a foggy look because of the blowing snow.IMG_5058

I took my pictures through the windows because it just wasn’t that pleasant to be standing outside being pelted by snowflakes. These were not the nice soft snowflakes that bring back memories of Christmas snows.  These flakes were kind of vicious and more than a little mean.

The flakes were driven by the wind and left bare, burnished places on the yard. They polished the little patches of ice and slowly mounded in hard packed drifts in grassy areas and against fence lines.

School classes were cancelled, businesses shut the doors early and interstates and highways were closed due to low visibility and accidents. Sometime during the night, last night, the winds quit and we woke to a much quieter scene and knew we had weathered the blizzard.

There wasn’t too much scooping to be done….thankfully. And it wasn’t that cold to be out there doing that job. This morning I grabbed the scoop and headed for the chicken coop. I figured the girls were going to be pretty happy to be let out….and I was right!

I did have to scoop them out so they could make it through the little door. For some reason the snow seemed to land in their chicken run and cover that little door. I was glad for all the bare patches left by the wind. There was no need to scoop trails everywhere for easier walking.

I am grateful that we did not get the 12 inches of snow that some people did. I do have to confess, that there is a wonderful beauty in the snowdrifts that are located around the outbuildings. That gusty wind was like a sculptor (a noisy sculptor)…..carving the drifts into strange, beautiful forms.

I am also grateful that every day is one day closer to Spring! That thought makes the cold and snow easier to take. It makes it easier to see the beauty in the snowdrifts and to enjoy the howling of the wind as it swirls around the corners of our home.

As I shoveled the snow onto the stalks of my perennials this morning I had to smile. I knew that this “white stuff” was going to eventually water those dead looking stalks and come Spring; help bring them back to life.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to experience the seasons of nature. They put me in mind of how closely those season parallel the seasons of life we go through. It is good to know that after the blizzard; the warmth will return, the grass will once again be green and the flowers will bloom.

Under the snowdrifts the blossoms are sleeping,
Dreaming their dreams of sunshine and June,
Down in the hush of their quiet they’re keeping
Trills from the throstle’s wild summer-sung tune.

I am never sure if it is our satellite internet that gets “iffy” or if it is our computer. Our laptop is at least 5 years old and I kind of think it doesn’t always work right. I know that last year we did not have internet one day and when I went outside to look at the dish it was totally covered in snow and not letting the signal through!
Fortunately I don’t really mind scooping trails to my chicken coop….as long as it is above zero. Today was about 28 and no wind so it felt pretty good out there.
It was so funny when I let the girls out today they went running as fast as they could…….they looked like kids let out at recess time.

I scoop trails to an open front shed that is near their coop. The shed faces south so the sun shines in there and it has a dirt floor where they can take their dirt baths. The temperature does not seem to bother near as much as the wind does.

The slippery places are where the snow covers the ice layer. That gets a little treacherous when walking around out there. The other night I came close to scrambling the eggs on my way back to the house from the chicken coop. Caught myself just in time and only cracked one!

Even your snowflakes have distinct personalities! They were vicious and mean. That certainly conveys the ferocity of the storm. We had lots of wind, too, though without snow. It blew the bird feeder down, scattering seeds all over the deck. Some of the birds enjoyed it; others were annoyed.

Normally I would give you “sympathy” for having such weather and say glad I don’t have to worry about it. However, after surviving the”bomb cyclone” winter storm here in Virginia Beach earlier this month, I can give you “empathy” instead.

Oh I know of what you speak, those mean, pelty snowflakes are not friendly and kind at all! I’m glad you were fine through the blizzard and isn’t it interesting the sculpted snowdrifts and the empty pathways. We do have to appreciate the artwork left by Mother Nature. I love your attitude while shoveling, great thought!! The girls probably all hunkered down for the storm too, had a little tea party and girl talk until it was safe to come out!! It’s been “warm” here this weekend but they’re talking snow for Tuesday…I’m hoping it goes out to sea…you don’t get lucky and have storms go out to sea….;-) Wishing you a blessed Sunday Faye!! 🙂 xo

Hi Faye – this is absent Peggy from Arkansas stopping by to say hi. Brrr – this post makes me cold. We had one 2 inch snow in mid January. Trying to stay well here and dodge the flu. Am going to sell my first book on Amazon soon and my second book is coming along nicely. Miss all my blogger friends. Posted a short hello on my blog. God bless you and hope life is treating you kind. Stay warm.

Now, we know I’m a worry wart, so this comment isn’t out of character….

It’s been rather a few days since you’ve posted on your blog and although I know that real life can be a conflict of interests sometimes, I just wanted to say hello and check that you and yours are OK.

So … are you and yours OK?

Yes we are!! I went on a vacation with some women members of my family and had planned to do a post the friday before leaving. Life got in the way so I will get back to it this week….hopefully today…if I can get my thought organized!
I did an item on my bucket list….I took a cruise to warmer places than the midwest of the USA. It was wonderful.

I am glad you were concerned!! I get that way too when blogs I follow go quiet. I did not get a post done before because we ended up in the hospital with my mother in law. She had emergency surgery on the friday before I left….actually two surgeries for really bad gall bladder issues. Between that and a funeral for my husband’s uncle ….life just go to busy to post before leaving.

Oh heck! Ohh, Chicken, I’m so very sorry to hear of the loss of Mr.Chickens Uncle. And very saddened to hear about your mother-in-law. Poor lady, TWO operations on her gall bladder. I hope that she’s mending and healing well and will be back to good health very soon. (and hopefully much improved in the gall bladder department – without any lasting problems).

Life certainly can get busy and all your plans can go awry.
Or … as my Grandma used to say … Sometimes it rains, and other times it pours. Then there’s times when God forgets he’s left the hose on and you nearly drown in it.
But … you didn’t drown – and you’re here to tell the tale, so I’m VERY thankful about that.

Stay safe Chicken, and take care of each other.
