There are times in life that you agree to do something that you later wonder what possessed you. Maybe you have never had that experience but, for some reason I seem to have that every so often.
Last August, when I went to my children’s home to babysit my grandkids…I had such a moment. My son had a stuffed dinosaur that he thought would be great as a bigger stuffed dinosaur…..I am sure you can already see where this is going.
For some reason, at the age of 33, he still thinks his mom can do things. He requested that I make a larger version of this stuffed dinosaur. My daughter-in-law and I, dutifully went to the fabric store and roamed the aisles looking for the appropriate colored fleece that was closest to the original dinosaur.
I took that fabric home and for the longest time it sat….in the same bag…..in the same spot by the sewing machine…..it sat…..and sat some more. I was reluctant to start on it as I had no pattern other than the original critter to go by.
One day I decided to just take the plunge. I hauled out some heavy paper to use for a pattern and cleared the kitchen table. I soon found out that it is pretty hard to make a pattern from a 3 dimensional object. That fluffy dinosaur would only squish down so far so that I could draw around it. It had a alarming tendency to spring back to it’s intended shape every time I took my hands off of it.
I ended up making a drawing on a hand drawn grid. Then I made a larger hand drawn grid and transferred the dinosaur drawing to that. If you are struggling to grasp what I am talking about…do not fear…..I am still not entirely sure I understand what I was doing!
I had thought to iron some fusible stuff on to the green fleece for the spots. I thought if they were a little more solid they would sew onto the orange body a little easier. Did you know that if you iron fleece, even with a dish towel to cover it…..it will melt? This gets very messy on your iron! I do have to point out; the upside of that, is the fact that you can still learn things at the age of 60.
After much trial and error I did manage to produce a larger version of the original. I am not sure how true to scale it is but I have a feeling there will be no complaints. l did fulfill the basic requirement….it is a bigger version of the original.
I often wonder why I agree to take on projects like this for my kids. I think it is because they are my kids and I don’t want to let them down. I want them to know that know matter how old they get, no matter what good or bad choices they make, no matter how successful they are or how unsuccessful they are, no matter how far away or how close they live….they will always be my children. I will always love them and if at all possible I will try help them out.
Sometimes, a mom’s love can take the shape of a large fleecy orange dinosaur.
Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.

Sweet and entertaining story. So true that a mother will try almost anything to keep her “mom image.” And for most I think there will be some sewing involved. “Mom, can you fix this…”

Oneta, that made me laugh, “Mom, can you fix this…” I have heard that so often through the years. I must confess I still ask my mom the same question and she is 84! She still tries to fix things for her kids too.

The new one looks wonderful. I am now convinced you can do ANYTHING!

I am not sure I can do anything Anne…..but if it looks at all doable I will usually give it a try.
I should have counted the times I ripped out seams on that dinosaur.

It turned out great! As mothers/grandmothers we do find ourselves doing things we normally wouldn’t have done. Always made with love.

It is kind of funny how our kids always are positive we can fix anything. In one way it is kind of flattering and in another it is kind of terrifying!

Excellent job, Faye! You are a true talent. Now, there is this cute little worn out teddy bear from my boyhood and I’d love to have a newer version. I can send you a picture……

Thank you so much Al. I think in my case it might be that old quote that fools rush in where angels fear to tread LOL.
Can that bear be squished down to make a patter hahahahahaha.

That is awesome! I have a granddaughter that says….no matter what is broken….”Grandma can fix it” tests your skills sometimes. I can completely relate to letting it set by the sewing machine for ages before tackling. Needs just that perfect time when there is absolutely nothing else to do😳

Once I started it, I kind of wished I had let it set a bit longer! Now that I have a pattern I could probably make another one.

Bless your heart for doing it and your son’s for believing you could , which you did.

He is always positive his mom can do it, if it comes to sewing……Fortunately he isn’t fussy about the finished project LOL. And he is pretty patient!

The dino is great – well done! And yes I know the feeling when you’ve almost accidently volunteered for something, ha ha!

Partway into the project…I wondered what I had gotten myself into! Lots of revamping and improvising.

Absolutely, blooming BRILLIANT, Chicken! Who would have guessed that the dinosaur was made entirely without a pattern?!!! Look at it. Actually really really look at it. It’s perfect.
We’ll have none of this ‘faults’. There are no faults. There is quite simply a Daddy Dinosaur and a little Dinosaur. They could have been made in the same factory.
I’m impressed BIG TIME Mrs. Chicken. Oh … and yes … Mom and Grammy can always make or fix things. I have no idea how that came about but it seems to be how it is. lol
Sending great big Dinosaur hugs ~ Cobs. xxx

I now have a pattern! Not a perfect pattern but a great starting point for the possibility of making another one! You just never know.
My next project is a 5 foot bean bag chair for son number 2.
Yes….Mom and Grammy’s are masters at innovation and improvising. We can stretch a meal a long ways and sew dinosaurs!

He did turn out much better that I thought he would. I did hit a point where I really wondered if I would ever get it done as I seemed to be taking out the seams as fast as I could sew them.

I am so shocked and thrilled at the same time, reading this post. Your ” Papa Dinosaur” is the exact replica of the “baby dinosaur”. I am not surprised your son asked you to make the same one for him- his trust in you was not misplaced- you were the best for the job. What a marvelous creation.
Thanks for sharing that fleece sticks to a hot iron- I have fleece sitting in my crafts draw just now.
I am at that stage in life right now – I find that I am so grateful my children ask me to do things for them still that I will jump and accept things without thinking of how they may turn out and that I am older now and that I can’t thread a needle or a sewing machine needle without someone else’s help.
I loved your post- I identify so much with it. The umbilical cord never gets cut off totally, does it ?

You are so right Susie….that cord is never truly cut. I had not thought of it that way but I love that thought.
Yes….fusible webbing cannot be ironed on to fleece….sticks like crazy to a hot iron.
My next project for son #2 is to sew a 5 foot across bean bag chair. Will see how that one turns out.
Make sure to post your projects on your blog…I will be looking for them! It is really good when our kids still need us.

Great catch up – love the dinosaur! The things mothers do for their children, and you’re right – as long as you’re a mother you’re never out of a job!
Lots of love to you 😺💕xxx

M;y son was right about those dinosaurs….they just kind of made you smile whenever you looked at them!
I think you are right about never being out of a job.

Awe Faye it’s magnificent!! You did a spectacular job!! And no I did not know fleece would melt under your iron, even with a towel…thanks for the heads up! Yeah parents are like that, always wanting to help out their kids even when the kids are 60 years old…I know!! It’s such a great feeling to know you can always count on your parents…next time your son brings out a fluffy animal quick look the other way!!! LOL!! ❤

Glad I could be a help of the melting of fleece! I first tried to fuse the webbing on without a towel between and it kind of turned into a hard lump! I will say that have sewed on pretty easy without stretching…..I then tried the towel and still slightly melted. Not as bad but still not a good thing LOL.
It is always interesting what those boys think I am capable of!

What’s even more interesting is that you accomplish it. They believe in you which inspires you and you do it, create it!! You really can do anything you set your mind to. Wishing you and your family a blessed Easter Faye. ☺

I don’t think Amazon would have helped…I think this might have been a one of a kind dinosaur that was a home made product!
