Lakefront Property???

 

There are some days that feel like you are a passenger on a train that seems to be gaining speed. Lately I think I have somehow managed to jump on that train and am just trying to catch my breath!

In a few weeks my middle son will be getting married. I have an entire list of things that need to get done before that day. My husband has a list of things he needs to do. For some reason I am in charge of both lists…I think that just might be the way it works in a marriage.

Trying to get those things done the last week has been difficult due to our very rainy weather. We have had a lot of flooding in our area of the country and have watched our fields covered by water, watched them uncovered only to be covered again with the rain last night and today.

Add in to that; the fact that our land line has been out since Saturday as the phone boxes down the road were covered by water. If I understand it right, anyone in our neighborhood with a land line has the same issue. I will admit it does make it quiet around the house! I am, however, grateful for a cell phone.

The road that takes us to town was covered by the river. No one around here ever remembers that happening before. We also saw three carp swim over the blacktop road….another thing we have never seen before!

We found out the other day that the motor in our well has decided to go on the fritz. I discovered this when our faucet seemed to be running really slow when I wanted a glassful of water.

Since that time we have been camping in our house. My husband has been pumping drinking water from our well with a Dempster hand pump that he and my dad installed this past spring. I am SO grateful they put that thing in!

We have also found our camping solar shower bag to be a very useful item. Living a few days with no running water in the house has been….interesting. I will not go so far as to say exciting……… so will just stick with the word……interesting.

I have decided that our problems are fairly minor when I think of the town just down the road that has derailed train cars leaking oil into the river! Yes our little town of Doon has made the national news with that one.

My husband and I have decided it can always be worse. It is amazing to me how single drops of water can band together and become a force of nature. Those single drops are a force that can change the landscape in less than a day.

It is a good lesson for me, that many people…acting with a common purpose can indeed change the world around them. We can be those drops of water that make an impact.

I have also learned that faith is a wonderful thing…keeping busy is a great way to keep your mind off what you cannot control and that it also helps accomplish something..

    Wow, those are water woes! We’ve had rain too, but not to that extent – but 5 years ago our cabin community lost all 300 homes in a flood, so I guess it isn’t our turn for wet weather this year. Hope you are high and dry soon!

    Though there is destruction all around, there is beauty in the water and the surprising rise of water level on the road. Its good to be free of sound for a while, isn’t it ?But you have internet.
    As you said, little drops of rain make a cloud and an impact,
    And every storm will pass- it has to.

    as i read this … i was thinking that thoughts are like drops of water, too. what kinds of thoughts do i allow to accumulate in my mind, heart, and soul? … and what a powerful force they become in my life as they gather and build … and that i need to do some adjusting in that area.

    Wow, a picture really is worth a thousand words! Sorry you are undergoing such trials with a wedding a short while off. The joy of that event should soon blanket all these difficulties in your memory. I wondered just where that spill was when I saw it in the news….that’s too close for comfort!

      The lack of running water in the house is just inconvenient and could be worse.
      Doon is only about 8 miles from us…fortunately we are upriver!
      It is amazing how fast they are getting things done over there.

    These pictures are amazing Faye … “lakefront property” especially. Water can wreak havoc in such a short time. I hope you don’t sustain any more damage … this is surely enough. It seems Mother Nature has been on a rampage across our nation and all around the world this year.

        That’s good Faye – it will help the water to recede. We have an all-day rain and stormy day on tap for tomorrow, then extreme heat on the way (95 and 105 heat index) … our third heat wave this year. (And to think I said I would not complain once it got hot after the over-long Winter and all the snow and cold! … I’ve complained plenty.)

        Me too – you feel drained as soon as you step outside the door. Not my kind of weather at all. A friend of mine and his wife recently retired in New Mexico. He researched around as he was looking to find a place with the most sunshine per year … I thought that spot was San Diego, but he said it is Las Cruces, New Mexico. They have been having temps of at/around 100 but humidity of something like 3%, 5% tops. He said you don’t even break a sweat. My kind of Summer/humidity.

        Well … because I’d been to bed a few times since I left that comment, even I didn’t know what I was talking about, so I had to go and re-read the post to find out what I was going on about … so here’s the answer …

        There is a comment missing, which would explain it all. I made an original comment about you post and predicament. A nice chatty post . . . and towards the end I said I hadn’t heard of a “camping solar shower bag” before, so I would have to go and ask Google to be my friend.

        Well straight after I clicked to send the comment, I did that very thing. I went to Google and Google very obligingly showed me exactly what a camping solar shower bag was. Even showing me one or two in use!

        Having seen the photo’s, I came back and made another, follow up, comment.

        My original comment is sadly missing, which, had it have been there, would have made everything make sense. 🙂

    Oh good grief! Not being tuned to TV I had no idea you were in this mess. Good will prevale. It always does ..it just takes its time. Floods are always bad but to a farmer it is double bad. xoxo

      The crops that are close to the river are going to have to be replanted if it does not get too late.
      Most roads are safe. There is a bridge about a mile away that needs to be checked and if not safe they will not replace as it is so costly to do that on a gravel road.
      Things will work out as they always do after a time…meanwhile we keep planning for the wedding….two more weeks!

    You have been inundated in more ways than one! We used to have yearly floods when the Mississippi would overflow its banks. We’d spray insect repellent on before getting out of the car to wade on the road. There were MONSTER mosquitoes looking for victims. Our home was five or ten miles away on high ground. I hope everything dries out quickly.

    I hope the water is starting to recede in your area. It is amazing how the landscape can change rather quickly. Sorry to hear your well pump decided to pick that time to exit. From experience, I know that is never fun. It changes everything. Hope you have found some relief. Many blessings and love to you. Enjoy the wedding and hope you can get both lists done. 💗

    I have thought about you a lot lately Faye. I have seen the weather reports for your area and knew things were not great for you. We get many of those types of floods here in Arkansas. I do hope things get better in your area of the world soon. Take care and stay safe.
