Early Mornings and Quiet Time

20180817_072447.jpg

It seems like most of our mornings lately are foggy, damp, and turning into that quiet season where the summer birds have decided it is time to head for winter homes.

It always amazes me how this time of year just seems to sneak up on me. I am not sure if it sneaks up because life is too busy or if things just change so slowly that you really don’t realize they have changed till you actually stand quietly and allow yourself to feel the change.

The other morning, was such a morning. I headed out, geared up in my yellow chicken galoshes (due to heavy dew on the grass), and went to let the girls out for the day. They had been patiently waiting (okay…maybe not so patiently waiting) for me to come open the door of their chicken run.

As I stepped out of our garage, the quiet took hold and seemed like a physical presence. It demanded that time be taken to just be still, take a breath and turn in all directions to take it in.

The shadows were long from the old boxelder that refuses to die. The early morning sun seemed to light the side of the barn and cast a glow into those dark shadows of the tree. Fog hung thick over the river and the only thing breaking that quiet morning was the steady drip of dew from rooflines and trees.

It was a hushed holy moment…..that space between the earth sleeping and waking for the busyness of the day. It is an amazing experience to be able to stand in that space and just be. There is something healing and comforting about that beautiful space.  It is a space that is full of promise and hope.

It is a peace that soothes the soul, quiets the mind and reminds us that life is to be lived and experienced. It reminds us that life cannot always be lived on our own terms or in our own time, but must be enjoyed when God presents it to us.

Such mornings are a gift and I treasure them. I often wonder if there were mornings like this when I was younger. I suspect there were….I also suspect that I never took the time back then to just stand in awe outside of my home and inhale the morning.

There is much to be said for getting older. Age does not always equal wisdom but it does slow us down, so that we may appreciate what is put before us. It makes us realizes what a gift it is, to just stand in the cool of the morning, see the treasure and wait with confident expectation of a wonderful day.

You can become blind by seeing each day as a similar one.
Each day is a different one,
each day brings a miracle of its own.
It’s just a matter of paying attention to this miracle.
Paolo Coehlo

Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly
(Psalm 5:3).

Such a gorgeous picture and a beautiful moment to reflect on. You are right, it is like there is a physical presence. That moment when change shifts in quietly. It is quite a heavenly and peaceful feeling. Calms the soul. Only He could give us these beautiful gifts. Love the quotes 😊💗

Yes there are some good enjoyable things about growing older. Enjoying nature hopefully is part of being a farmer. Like the day you realize the sun has changed and things really are turning to Fall and the harvest season is about to get underway.
    Good picture!

You are so right Beverly. Today you could hear the leaves start to rustle down by the river. It doesn’t seem like they should be drying up but with the days getting shorter they are doing what they do for this time of year!
Love the rhythm of those seasons.

I’m with you on that Faye – soon the neighborhoods will be busy as people will be rushing more than usual to take their kids to school, the neighborhoods will be bustling – I’ve enjoyed the past three days … coolish and quiet in the morning. A very peaceful way to begin the day.

You’re so right. When we’re young we don’t stop to smell the roses. We’re too busy planting them, fertilizing and caring for them. The beauty of aging is that we’re almost forced to slow down for our advantage. Having those holy silent moments at the beginning of a new day is priceless.

A very profound post. The days are sneaking in on us- where did the year go ? Were we too busy to see it go or did we not care enough ?
The picture is so beautiful- I wish I could come see your foggy morning and the clucking, perhaps scolding girls. But even here, daylight is closing that much the earlier. Summer light is shrinking. The days may be getting cooler though we know it not.
Its time to slow down for the empty nesters, who wish sometimes they were back in those busy days but other times know this is for the best- old joints and bodies cannot take the running about any more.

Your description of this moment is exquisite. I felt like I was right there with you. Those are special moments when you can actually get goose bumps just from realizing that you are a part of a beautiful scene that deserves reverence.

Love that barn! There is something about barns that make me feel at home. You are lucky to be where you are! And I love that your chickens look forward to your morning tete-a-tete!

Thank you so much Al….you are so right..there are times when it feels like we are part of the scene around us and that is a wonderful thing.
I also have a love of old red barns and I am so glad that our farm has one! It always kind of seems like the heart of a farmyard.

God answers prayer and it is evident through the words you write – your posts always relay bits of wisdom. ♥
Many years ago after a sermon at church about wisdom I stopped praying for patience and began praying for strength and wisdom. It is this that has gotten me through what could have been some really tough times.

I know exactly how you feel and that photo captures those feelings completely. It”s like I’m there. What a gift it is when we step outside into God’s work. It takes our breath away and gives us strength. beautifully stated, as always, Faye.

I take early morning walks and find that to be a holy time for me. I like to walk and pray for my family. Over the last week or so I am beginning to see green acorns on the sidewalks. Where did the summer go?
