Christmas Ornaments

There is something special about Christmas ornaments. We even heard about Christmas ornaments during the children’s sermon at church this morning. The couple doing the Children’s sermon asked the kids if any of them had angels on their Christmas tree.

A few of the kids raised their hands, some did not. They then went on to explain why angels are on Christmas trees. They explained that angels brought great news of joy that long ago night.20181223_160618.jpg

My husband leaned over with a smirk, and whispered in my ear that our tree had a spaceship ornament…..and he is right. I have no idea if it really is a spaceship. It just kind of resembles something off the movie “Men in Black”. It is an ornament from my husband’s childhood and always finds a place on our tree.

I often wonder if my husband loves that ornament because of childhood memories or if he just thinks it looks kind of funky….maybe it is a bit of both. I love that ornament because it speaks of my husband’s childhood. It is a link to his family history. I also love the fact that it is plastic and therefore durable enough for grandkids to handle!

Strangely…or maybe not so strange that “funky” ornament brings to mind the story of Christmas for me. Maybe it is because it comes back to family. Our family history becomes entwined with the history of that night in a stable.

I think Christmas speaks of beginnings and babies are definitely a new beginning. It speaks of the fact that over 2000 years ago Mary and Joseph became the earthly family of Jesus….Immanuel…God with us. It speaks of promises kept from the beginning of creation. It speaks of faithfulness and the fact that He always provides.

Which brings me back to angels…..all those little kids this morning knew that the angels told of a wonderful thing on that first Christmas. Their faith was confident and sure. May we have the confidence of a child that angels indeed brought the greatest news ever. May we find joy in looking at our ornaments, whether angels or spaceships, and may those ornaments remind us of the reason for this Christmas joy.

    I have angles . Years ago my sister took a ceramics class at her church and made me three beautiful angles each playing a musical instrument. There were three of us girls in our family. The middle one is already where we want to go. Then my sister,again, gave me a stained glass angle when my son moved to heaven. I also made angles years ago out of torn sheets all glued together and spray painted . but they are all wrong. Why we always depic angles a beautiful female forms is a question I have never been able to answer. Real angles are strong,powerful beings that some say can be over 10 ft. tall. They are Gods messengers and warriors when needed to be. I do believe we have guardian angles watching over us but it’s the bad angles we need to watch out for because they can look like the most beautiful light in the world.

    Don’t you love decorating the tree! Mine is full of memories too – plus small things I’ve picked up in my travels, repurposed into tree ornaments.

    We have no idea how many angels we have in our house. They are everywhere. When our first baby died at birth, the doctor told me there was now another angel in heaven. I didn’t agree with his philosophy, since the Bible says God created angels as different beings, but I collected angels after that. That long-ago loss has filled our home with joyful angels, many of them playing instruments or singing. John patiently unpacks them and places them on windowsills, cabinet tops, mantels — any flat surface. I go around and greet them like long-lost friends. I’m going to give John an extra hug for his angel faithfulness.

    This year our tree has only lights and angels. The angel on top I have had for nearly 30 years and the others are a collection of snow angel figurines, each on has a tag with a specific blessing attached. I don’t know if you saw my post about it but the girls and I used to have fun putting them on the tree together. They do have special meaning for us.
    When I was young I remember my parents having a couple of those “spaceship” ornaments that we hung on the tree. I always thought they were suppose to be bells. I’m not sure what happened to them but your photo brought back memories.

      I bet your tree is beautiful! Ours will stay up a bit as we are having our family celebration this weekend.
      I have a feeling you are right about the ornament being a bell. I think I might still call it a spaceship so I don’t confuse our sons LOL.

        Our tree with all of the angels was just what we needed this year. I passed along some of our other ornaments to our daughters this year as they all have their own places now a did their own decorating. I wanted them to have some memories of Christmas’s past. Your spaceship ornament will always be a spaceship for your family – one of those fun and quirky things that familes share. We have some like a vacuum named Julio and fried eggs with a soft yolk being called volcano eggs. LOL! Blessing to you and your family as well Faye. ♥
