Learning From a Cat

We seem to have acquired a cat. Last year this cat wandered to our place and has been wandering in and out of our lives ever since.

She has always been very leery of us till a couple months back. That was the first time I was able to touch her. It took a lot of time…coaxing, leaving food and just talking to her every time she was within sight.

My husband started calling her Blackie, for obvious reasons, but for me I still just call her Cat. She seems to know both names.

Cat loves to sun on our deck in the mornings but runs for cover the minute we open the patio door. It is a different story when we open the door to the garage. Once that door opens she waits for us to come out. I have not yet, figured out why we are so scary when we come out a different door. I have a feeling it is because she expects leftover food from the garage and is not certain what to expect from the patio door.

She has been teaching me a lot of lessons during this time of uncertainty. Her relationship with me kind of reminds me of our relationship with God. We know He is good and only wants what is best for us.

We can get just close enough for Him to touch us….but can get very uncomfortable when He tries to pick us up and carry us. Cat will only let me pet her. When I try draw her close and pick her up she gets nervous and fidgety and wiggles till I let her down.

I have a feeling there are a lot of us; that are like that cat. We really want to be held close to the heart of our Maker but fear holds us back. We cannot imagine that we are loved so much that He wants us that close.

Fear has a way of stealing our joy, stealing our lives and keeping us from realizing an amazing closeness with our Maker and with those we love. It has a way of keeping us from experiencing grace and giving grace.

We are in a time of great uncertainty.  We might be acting a lot like the cat. Perhaps we should step out in trust….perhaps we need to give over control and let ourselves be held close. Perhaps we need to just accept grace and give it in return.

Maybe, just maybe, we need to get beyond waiting at the garage door for leftovers and sit by the patio door and wait for the really good stuff.

May this find you safe, healthy and trusting.  May this find you waiting by the patio door, in faith and hopeful expectation that life will be good because God is good.

Grace is not reserved for good people;
grace underscores the goodness of God.

I love this…I’m a cat person, and our cat started life as a feral kitten rescued by my son. He has lived in three households in the family, ending up in ours because of allergies in the two other homes. He is our delight at night when we relax and he goes between us from chair to chair. He is spoiled and we love spoiling him. Because he was feral at the start, he will always be a little skittish and scares easily. I enjoyed the way you compared your sweet ‘Cat’ to our relationship with Our Father in Heaven.

I kind of have the feeling God puts these animals in our lives to teach us things….if we open our eyes and hearts to learning the lesson.
Loved reading about your feral cat. When my youngest son lived at home he could find a stray cat/kitten/animal anywhere and he would always haul it home to be loved.

Wise advice during these times when many feel fear!
We babysat a cat a few years back. It belonged to a relative. They told us the Cats name was “Heidi”. Heidi bolted out the back door within minutes of her arrival. She couldn’t get out of the closed in porch, but she could get down a hole that got her under the porch. That is the last we saw of her for the two weeks we had her. She kept eating the food we left out, so we assumed she was fine.
When her owners got back, they called her and she quickly came to them. Turns out the cat’s name wasn’t ‘Heidi’, it was ‘Hidey’ because it was timid and fearful and liked to hide…

That is an awesome name for a cat that does not want to be found! Loved that story Margy. The virus is getting real around here. there are 4 cases in the neighboring county. We just kind of hang out at home and only go out as necessary. How are you doing with this stuff going on?

Like you, we mostly stay home – but we don’t hesitate to walk in the neighbourhood or go to town for groceries. We aren’t really in a high risk area, and we take all the hand washing precautions, etc.
But we also aren’t afraid of this virus. We can live our life being afraid of a death rate of maybe 1 to 5%, or we can live our life thinking that 95 to 99% don’t die…

A great post. Yes, I guess we are like this cat when it comes to God. I know in time this cat will begin to trust you. I suppose we are not trusting enough when it come to God – sometimes I think he is so far away and untouchable. A lack of faith on my part – I am sure.

I had a friend tell me once that God is not far away ….we just cannot always see, hear or feel that He is near. I love the verse of Job 23:8. It totally relates to that feeling of Him being far away.
