The Persistence of Spring

IMG_5578

The last two days have been absolutely beautiful around here. Yesterday we were close to 70 degrees. I am not quite sure if we made it there or not; but it was wonderful. The sun was bright and shining, the winds blew gently (for Iowa) and the mud on the yard and the road was actually drying.

During the last weeks, I have noticed that the tulips I planted in a pot were starting to come up. One even decided to bloom!  I was rather amazed they actually grew. My mom gave the bulbs to me last fall and I never got them in the ground due to being ill.

I decided to try them in a pot. I had planned to put the pot in the garage so they would be cold but I never did as I was afraid they would freeze…..so that pot just sat in the back hallway biding it’s time. I felt rather like a mother hen watching over that pot as the bulbs started sending up shoots.

I also had Gerber daisies in pots in the house this past winter. My husband took them upstairs last fall and placed them by a south window so I could attempt to keep them alive for this coming summer. If it had not been for my husband constantly reminding me to water them…..those daisies would have been long dead.IMG_5575

Yesterday he went upstairs and hauled them back down for me and put them on the deck. There was something so satisfying about working on those pots. I spent time trimming away the dead crunchy leaves, picking out the dead bugs that seemed to have accumulated through the winter and watering what was left.

I love the fact that under all the dead stuff were brand new fuzzy little leaves just starting to unfurl. It was amazing to me how much life there seemed to be and how ready those plants were to spring back to life. They really are very persistant.

Maybe that is what I love about Spring.  It is persistant. It always comes no matter how long or how hard the Winter has been. Spring is life….spring is the hope of abundance…spring is a promise.

Our lives are much like the seasons. We spend time in winter where it is dark, long, cold and just plain hard.  And then comes Spring in all it’s glory. You hardly dare believe it has actually arrived. If you are like me you are encouraged by the signs of life that Spring brings to the world around us and into our lives.

May today find you overjoyed to be in that Spring of life. May signs of new life be evident around you. May you inhale the fragrance of the promise that is Spring.

Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection,
not in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time.
– Martin Luther

    Faye,
I am so happy that the tulips in the pot flowered. It is like even though you didn’t put them down on the ground when you couldn’t, they stayed in the pot to show you they care- He cares.
And the Gerber flowers- such a beautiful sign of spring.
We are having quite a long spring here- usually spring comes here in a flash and disappears before we even know it passed by. God has been marvellous in giving us a longer spring/ winter here this year and some rains too.
I love the surprises we have with the weather. No one can predict what will happen tomorrow- in terms of weather or anything else but through it all, one thing stands out- that God is there- God is there holding our hands.

I am with you on enjoying the weather surprises…especially when it is beautiful weather….tho I will say our cold winters make the Spring so much sweeter.

Here is a wish for Spring to appear and get its act together. Ha Just when we think we can plant our weatherman here in Arkansas tells us we will have a freeze in early April. So Faye, lets hope Mother Nature brings Spring soon. Such a lovely picture of your tulip. Have a happy day!

LOLOL Peggy. Yes Spring likes to play games. I had to haul the pots back in yesterday due to freeze warnings. I know they will not be in for long though, so that is a comfort!
The tulip was in the sun and just looked like it was glowing so I had to get up close and get a photo.

There are days when we wonder…Will Spring ever get here.? But she always does even though it is a on and off again thing for a while. We have had really warm days and now more cool coming in. It is hard not to turn the heat back on but I do enjoy the ‘free’ days of neither heat or air units turning on. It must be a boost for the farmer if the land is begining to dry out.

so glad you are having fair days! I love tulips! Mine are up but not blooming. The quote was perfect and I have often thought the same thing. I do hope the sun dries up the mud soon. I sure know something bout Cobs in the next day or so. love Michele

Oh my goodness Faye, this is simple beautiful, you have me in tears!!! I think the persistance of Spring is the perfect description. I too have been noticing the signs. My living room window looks out to the backyard and the woods and I have really noticed how the viney bushes (I don’t know what they”re called, I’m not as knowledgeable about trees and plants as I’d like to be) anyway I’m noticing how they are expanding and rising up and becoming bigger everyday. They’re still “dead” looking, there’s no green on them yet but they are growing. I also noticed how dark they have become where their roots are close to the ground. It’s exciting and encouraging to watch!! So happy your tulips and daisies are both blooming and made it thru this especially hard winter…just like you!! ❤

I have been watching the trees by the river Deb! They are also brown but getting bigger and fatter. I suspect one of these days they will suddenly be green. It is kind of cool when they are at this stage because there is an eagle nest down by the river that we can watch through binoculars till the leaves cover it up.

What a gorgeous tulip! When I gaze at such detail up close it always bring a sense of God to me. Thanks for posting this lovely flower. Plants coming back to life are exciting. My calla lily began to shoot up early this year. I have it in my basement to overwinter, and already it is over a foot tall. New growth, Spring, the remembrance of the Resurrection, it’s a wonderful time of year.

I have to get my calla lily bulbs out of the basement and into the ground in a few weeks. I typically dig them out and store them in a paper grocery bag in the basement. Never thought about putting them in a pot.
It is a wonderful time of year! Spring and the Resurrection.

I grow them all year in one pot. My son gave it to me for Mother’s Day many years ago. I am so pleased I have it for another year.
