There are times in life when you meet someone or several someones who just seem to “click” with you. The weekend of the women’s retreat I attended, was a great time to gather with those special someones and also get to meet some more new someones.
What really ends up being wonderful, is the fact that so many of those “someones” turn into friendships….a sisterhood of sorts. That is a real blessing!
I think I love going to that particular retreat because of the very fact of all those relationships. It is a great place to reconnect with women who share in the joy of praising, singing, laughing and serving. It is also a great place to build new friendships.
This year, I ended up working in the same room with a gal who is a fellow chicken owner lover. (She may be even more of a chicken lady than me…..Her girls sometimes get their toenails painted!)
At one point in the weekend she came up to me with an envelope, stood 2 inches from my face and informed me I needed to open the envelope she held in her hand. She then gave strict instructions that what was contained in that envelope needed to be used that very day. I am here to tell you, that it is impossible to refuse a woman who is that determined!
I should have had some premonition that the package was going to contain something unusual. I also should have known that, knowing Vickie, I might be doing something I was not totally sure about…..a journey of sorts without knowing your destination!
The package was opened and out tumbled a pair of socks…..not your typical pair of socks….but a pair of socks. I had already agreed to her terms, so I did have to wear them, for a time, that very day.
I will say it made for a lot of fun, a lot of laughter and memories were made. I have a feeling that some of those memories may come back to haunt me. I also have a feeling those socks will become standard apparel for at least part of a day the next time I work that retreat weekend.
Looking back, I realize that part of the reason I agreed to those terms was trust. I was trusting the bond of the special sisterhood of this group of “someones”. Over the years I have grown to know these women; and to love these women as family.
Like sisters, they may tease, pull pranks and push you out of your comfort zone…but like sisters….they will always have your back, always love you and always hold you accountable. They may not be sisters by blood….but they are sisters of the heart.
Everyone should have that special set of someones in their life. I pray that your life contains a few of those someones and that they form a wonderful sisterhood or brotherhood for you. It is indeed a blessing.
Of all possessions a friend is the most precious.

It is wonderful to ha e good Christian girlfriends. There’s something about that common Jesus connection that glues the relationships we develop.

That is so true! I think that is why I love working that particular retreat weekend so much. I love the “glue” that forms those bonds.

I think the common bond of faith is what really draws us together. The retreat is just a wonderful way to renew that bond and our faith every year.

Don’t know if you fish much, but you shouldn’t have any trouble scratching for worms.

I do like to fish! The only problem is we typically only catch carp in our little river! When we get a catfish we feel pretty good about it.
I will have to work on my scratching technique to get those worms!

A truly wonderful, warm story of women who didn’t know each other, now knowing enough about each other to love each other and feel comfortable giving and receiving a fun gift.
I admit to smiling broadly when I saw the photograph…. and said out loud … “Oh that’s SO Chicken Grandma. They must have been made with her in mind!” lol.
I love this post Chicken. It bought me joy and a warm feeling which touched my soul and left it feeling the love.
Thank you Chicken… for all the times you’ve made me laugh, think, wonder, study and think. Thank you also for all the love I’ve felt and hope to continue to feel as I hang around in your corner of the internet, for it’s truly a lovely place to be.
Sending you much love ~ Cobs. xxx

The gal who gave me the socks ended up wearing some purple socks with roosters all over them! She can do the most perfect imitation of a chicken walking around and scratching in the dirt. She has it down to a science.
I am so glad this post warmed you Cobs. You would fit into this bunch of women wonderfully! They are all just like you. Warm,faith-filled, loving, funny, and with servant hearts. Only you…..would have the coolest accent of all of us. We are just a bunch of mid-westerners with zip for an accent.

lol … I’d have you all talking British within an hour. (aw heck now the thought of that tickles the heck out of me! LOL)
I can imagine you all laughing and giggling together like the young girls you are, but sharing and caring together with your hearts filled with love, doing what needs to be done and giving thanks for being able to do it.
I can think of nothing finer than to have been there with you all.
Next time you go, my essence and spirit will travel with you, and will be there, among you all, joining in with the laughs, sitting quietly with you all when required, and working with you, giving and sharing of my heart.

Faye,
Lovely sock! You must have felt like “Big Bird” from foot upwards wearing them. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when the retreaters saw you wearing them. I would wear them all the time, to remind me of a little hen girl who loved you enough to give you a gift of tender, loving, laughing care.

That’s it Susie! I did feel rather like big bird! The socks are so funny and just make me smile every time I see them. Maybe they also make me smile cause I do remember Vickie, who gave them to me.

What wonderful socks. I’m going to have to check to see if I can find a pair. My sister has chickens and they would be a perfect gift for her next week on her birthday. Love them…thanks for sharing.

Those are fantastic socks! That sisterhood is special as it is especially sacred when you can share your life and your faith with them. If you wear those when you are out with your girls they will be in awe of you 🙂

I am going to have to try wearing those socks this summer when I feed the girls! Makes me grin wondering if they will even notice! They tend to worry more about what I have in the bucket than what I have on!
It is an amazing sisterhood. Several of those women are definitely sisters of the heart.

Awesome Ma’am, even the Bible tells us that there are friends that sticks closer than a brother.
The joy is usually unspeakable when you spend time with people that shares the same goals, aspirations, motives, thoughts etc with you. You don’t struggle to express your. Some how they just understand what you’re thinking or needed to say.
I’m happy to know that you had a good time and met amazing people. Keep smiling Ma’am 😁
